Patang (1960) - Picture Preview

14 Jan, 2026 | Archival Reproductions by Cinemaazi
It is Diwali, but the departing Festival of Light leaves darkness for Shanti (Mala Sinha). She is blinded by exploding crackers which Rajan (Rajendra Kumar), her sweetheart, lights.

Rai Saheb Dayal is the chairman, and Lala Motiram, Shastriji, Babu Himmatrai and Ramdas the members of the municipality of Basantpur.

Motiram is a merchant, Shastriji the temple pujari and Himmatrai a contractor. Ramdas is a journalist with a passion for the truth, which cannot be said of the others, all of them seemingly worthy gentlemen.

Ramdas's daughter Shanti and Raj an, the Rai Saheb's son, have been playmates from childhood, but one night during Diwali Shanti's eyes are injured when Rajan lights crackers.

Smitten with remorse, the young man decides to study surgery and atone by restoring Shanti's eye-sight when he becomes a surgeon.

Basantpur is ruled by Rai Saheb Dayal (Ulhas), Rajan's father, seen with his henchmen, Shastriji (Randhir), Lala Motiram (Kesari) pointing with his pencil and Himmatrai (Chaman Puri). Shanti's father Ramdas (Raj Mehra), their colleague, stands at the right.

One day Rai Saheb Dayal in a fit of rage kills a man with his gun, and Ramdas takes the blame to save him from the consequences. He goes to jail, leaving his wife and daughter in the Rai Saheb's care.

There is little reciprocation from the Rai Saheb to his generous act of sacrifice, and the Rai Saheb not only does not look after Shanti and her mother but makes them leave the town.

He has plans to marry his son into a rich family and is keen to sever the ties of affection between Shanti and his son, Rajan.

Rajan, now a brilliant surgeon, performs the operation which restores Shanti's eye-sight. She sees him standing anxiously before her.

When Rajan returns to Basantpur as a skilled surgeon, Shanti is no longer there. His father is evasive about her whereabouts, but he succeeds in finding her and bringing her back to Basantpur. He performs the operation which restores her eye-sight fully. When he comes out of jail, Ramdas is welcomed by his daughter who is now able to see quite well.

Rajan asks Ramdas for his daughter's hand in marriage, Ramdas, however, knows that the Rai Saheb has other wishes and acts accordingly.

Very soon, he discovers that the man he had always thought to be good and respectable is in reality far from being so. He tumbles to many awful truths about the Rai Saheb and his colleagues when he investigates the affairs of the orphanage and the robbery in the temple.

Ramdas comes out of prison and learns how thankless a man the Rai Saheb has been. But Bhola (played by Om Prakash), the Rai Saheb's eccentric younger brother, rallies to his help.

Ramdas launches a relentless crusade against the Rai Saheb and his henchmen. The newspaper on which he works carries almost daily exposures of them, and soon he is a terror to them in every sense. They decide to have him murdered.

But, by a quirk of fate, the Rai Saheb's own son, Rajan, is stabbed instead of the troublesome newspaperman. There is consternation among the evildoers and Nemesis overtakes them.

In the deadly battle between the forces of good and evil, Rajan becomes a casualty. He, instead of Ramdas, is stabbed, but he lives and Shanti nurses him back to health. The evil-doers are defeated.

Good is triumphant, and Shanti and Rajan are united in wedlock. All is again well in Basantpur.
