The history of Hindi Cinema contains numerous instances of talented composers who, in spite of their capabilities and knowledge of music could not make the kind of name in its annals which they were capable of. One of the major reasons for this is that they did not have the extremely important skill of marketing themselves in showbiz. One such composer is Ramkrishna Shinde who debuted in 1947 with the film Manager.

Nearly twenty-six years have elapsed since the demise of Ramkrishna Shinde but his wife and two daughters continue to reside in Mumbai. The family neither had much contact with filmdom nor did they show an inclination towards it. His demise put an end to whatever limited contact they had with filmdom also.

Ramkrishna Shinde was born to a Maratha family in Western Maharashtra's Malwan area. The exact month and date of his birth are not known. According to the estimates of his family he was born in the year 1918 on the day of Ramnavmi which led to his being named Ramkrishna. He was the eldest among two brothers and two sisters. He was merely nine years old when his father passed away. In this situation, his mother's brother and sister took the family to Mumbai where his childhood was spent in the Nana Chowk area.

Although the family did not have a tradition of music, he showed a natural inclination towards it. Without his mother's permission, he started learning vocals from Pandit Sitaram Pant Modi and taking sitar lessons from Pandit Madhav Kulkarni. He also started participating in various musical events at fairs and exhibitions. Singer Lata Mangeshkar had also participated in few such programs, as after her father's demise she had the responsibility of taking care of her family. To take care of his family, Ramkrishna also had to take up a job at well known industrial family Ruia owned Don Mills in Parel. In 1944 he got married to Nalini, the daughter of the Manjrekar family which resided in Mumbai's Opera House area. It was during this time that Ramkrishna got introduced to famous tabla player Ramakant Parsekar and dance director Parvati Kumar Kambli. One day he decided to take up music as a career and resigned from his job at Don Mills.
Initially, he started composing for Marathi plays. His compositions started gaining popularity and he became a known name among the enthusiasts of Marathi plays. It was these melodious tunes that brought the offer of the movie Manager to him. This 1947 film was made under the banner of Tiwari Productions and was directed by I.P. Tiwari. The main cast comprised of Jaiprakash, Poornima, Gobind, Sarla, Aziz, Ameena and Tiwari. Around the same time, he also got the opportunity to compose music for the film Bihari (1948) which also had another composer Naresh Bhattacharya for it. This film, made under the banner of Samaj Chitra Mumbai, was directed by the duo of K.D. Katkar and A.R. Zamindar. Its artists were B Nandrekar, Surekha, H.Prakash, Faiyaaz Bai, Namibalkar, Samson and Shabnam. The song in lyrics of Munshi Farogue, Sabze Ki Durfishani, Phoolon Ka Shamiyana in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar became fairly popular. The film actually got released in 1948. Another film, Kiski Jeet also released in 1948. This film was also made by Tiwari Productions. Its director was Safdar Mirza and its cast included Sadiq, Indu Kulkarni, Pushpa, Maqbool, Ameena Bai, Chandrika, and Tiwari. It had lyrics by Kumar Sharma.
Apart from Marathi theatre, the ballet dances of Indian National theatre brought him immense popularity and his name at one time became synonymous with ballet dance music. During his lifetime he composed for 27 ballet dances whose shows all over the world brought him lots of accolades. It was due to the popularity of these music pieces that composer Amiya Chakraborty chose him to arrange some dance music for his movie Gauna in 1950. Although Husnlal-Bhagatram were the composers for the movie, Ramkrishna was specially called to compose the dance music which was picturized on Usha Kiron.
After composing by the name R.K. Shinde and Ramkrishna Shinde in the 1940s, he returned to film music with a new name, Hemant Kedar which led many to mistakenly assume him to be a composer duo! When we met his wife Nalini recently, she told us that Hemant and Kedar were the favorite ragas of Ramkrishna. Due to this reason he had changed his name to Hemant Kedar. He composed for Khaufnaak Jungle (1955), Police Station (1959) and Captain India (1960) with this name. Shyam Film Service had produced Khaufnaak Jungle which released in 1955 under the direction of Godrej K Appu. The cast consisted of Baburao, Indira, Nihal, Raja Salim, and Manju. The lyrics were by Girish Mathur.
Ramkrishna Shinde's daughter Ragini tells us that there were a few movies composed by him for which though the songs were recorded but the films remained unreleased. These include the following movies:-
1. Hamari Kahani (the 1940s) made under the banner of Raj Theater
2. Avinash (the 1950s) made under the banner of Chitra Shikhar
3. Sati Mahananda under the banner of Shankar Productions
4. Jannat Ki Hoor under the banner of A Karim Productions.
He had also recorded two songs for the movie Peeli Kothi. One more movie of his was Pataal Devta which was the first movie for which actress Mumtaz faced the camera. Had the movie been released, it would have been the debut of Mumtaz.

Shinde also composed music for two Marathi films. The first one was To Chi Sadhu Olakhawa (1966) and the second was Aai Aahe Shetaat (1970) which was also produced by him. He also composed for a few programs for All India Radio among which his music for Honaji Bala, Billi Mausi Ki Fajeehat, Sona Aur Saat Baune, Mansi, and Usha Muskaayi brought lots of appreciation to him.
The Shinde family has been cut off from the film world since the patriarch's death. The financial uncertainties which his work brought led to his wife Nalini to take up a job. She worked for over thirty years as a Government school teacher which helped her get their two daughters married in good homes.

Their elder daughter Ragini's husband Vilas Andhare retired as director of the Maharashtra Government's Publication department's Maharashtra Granth Nirmaata Mandal. Their second daughter Anuradha's husband Hemant Shende has retired after service of forty years from Dena Bank last year. Nalini is now 83 years old. She now spends time with the families of her elder daughter Ragini (who stays at Ghodbandar Road, Thane) and younger daughter Anuradha (who lives at Worli, Mumbai's Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road).

Although Hindi Cinema did not give Ramkrishna Shinde his due, Ballet music gave him due recognition. Even at the time when he passed away due to a heart attack on 14 September 1985, he was composing for Raja Dhale's ballet, Chandalika and Ajit Sinha's ballet Rituchakra which was being made for Doordarshan.

हिंदी सिनेमा के इतिहास में ऐसे बहुत से गुणी संगीतकारों के नाम मौजूद हैं जिन्होंने मौक़ा मिलते ही बेहद मधुर धुनें रचीं लेकिन तमाम काबिलियत और संगीत का भरपूर ज्ञान होने के बावजूद सिनेजगत में उन्हें वो जगह नहीं मिल पायी जिसके वो हक़दार थे। इसकी एकमात्र वजह यही है कि उनमें इस चकाचौंध भरी दुनिया में ख़ुद को बनाए रखने के लिए सबसे ज़्यादा ज़रूरी, ख़ुद को बेच पाने का गुण नहीं था। ऐसे ही संगीतकारों में शामिल है नाम रामकृष्ण शिंदे का, जिन्होंने साल 1947 में बनी फ़िल्म मैनेजर से अपने करियर की शुरूआत की थी।

रामकृष्ण शिंदे का निधन हुए तो क़रीब छब्बीस बरस गुज़र चुके हैं लेकिन उनकी पत्नी और दोनों बेटियां आज भी मुम्बई में ही रहती हैं। फ़िल्मी दुनिया से इस परिवार का नाता न तो कभी पूरी तरह से जुड़ा था और न ही कभी इन्होंने उसे जोड़ने की कोशिश की। जो थोड़ा बहुत नाता ख़ुद-ब-ख़ुद जुड़ा भी था, वो भी रामकृष्ण शिंदे के निधन के बाद पूरी तरह से टूट गया।

पश्चिमी महाराष्ट्र के मालवण इलाक़े के एक मराठा परिवार में जन्मे रामकृष्ण शिंदे के जन्म की सही तारीख और साल कहीं दर्ज तो नहीं है लेकिन उनके परिवार के अंदाज़े के मुताबिक़ उनका जन्म साल 1918 में, रामनवमी के दिन हुआ था और इसी वजह से उनका नाम रामकृष्ण रखा गया था। दो भाई और दो बहनों में रामकृष्ण शिंदे सबसे बड़े थे। वो नौ-दस बरस के हुए कि उनके पिता का देहांत हो गया। ऐसे में उनके मामा और मौसी अपनी विधवा बहन और उनके चारों बच्चों को साथ लेकर मुम्बई चले आए, जहां नानाचौक के इलाक़े में रामकृष्ण का बचपन ग़ुज़रा।

परिवार में संगीत की परंपरा न होते हुए भी रामकृष्ण का झुकाव ख़ुद-ब-ख़ुद इस ओर होने लगा था। घर में बताए बिना उन्होंने पं.सीताराम पंत मोदी से गायन और पं.माधव कुलकर्णी से सितार सीखना तो शुरू किया ही, मेलों और नुमाईशों में होने वाले संगीत के कार्यक्रमों में भी वो हिस्सा लेने लगे। ऐसे ही कुछ कार्यक्रमों में उनके साथ लता ने भी शिरक़त की थी, जिन पर अपने पिता मास्टर दीनानाथ के निधन के बाद बड़ी संतान होने के नाते परिवार की ज़िम्मेदारी आ पड़ी थी। उधर रामकृष्ण को विधवा मां और भाई-बहनों की ज़रूरतों को पूरा करने के लिए उस जमाने के जानेमाने कपड़ा उद्योगपति रूईया परिवार की परेल स्थित डॉन मिल्स में नौकरी करनी पड़ी। साल 1944 में उनकी शादी मुम्बई के ऑपेरा हाऊस इलाक़े के रहने वाले मांजरेकर परिवार की बेटी नलिनी से हुई। उसी दौरान रामकृष्ण मशहूर तबला-वादक रमाकांत पार्सेकर और नृत्य-निर्देशक पार्वती कुमार कांबली के सम्पर्क में आए और फिर एक रोज़ संगीत को ही रोज़ी-रोटी का जरिया बनाने का फ़ैसला कर उन्होंने डॉन मिल्स की नौकरी से इस्तीफ़ा दे दिया।
शुरूआत में रामकृष्ण ने मराठी नाटकों में संगीत देना शुरू किया। उनकी बनायी बंदिशें बेहद मशहूर होने लगीं और बहुत जल्द वो मराठी नाटकों के दर्शकों के बीच एक जाना-पहचाना नाम बन गए। अपनी बनाई कर्णप्रिय धुनों की वजह से ही उन्हें फ़िल्म मैनेजर मिली थी। तिवारी प्रोडक्शंस के बैनर में 1947 में बनी इस फ़िल्म के निर्देशक थे आई.पी.तिवारी और मुख्य कलाकार थे जयप्रकाश, पूर्णिमा, गोबिंद, सरला, अज़ीज़, अमीना और तिवारी। उसी दौरान उन्हें फ़िल्म बिहारी (1948) का संगीत तैयार करने का भी मौक़ा मिला जिसमें उनके अलावा एक अन्य संगीतकार नरेश भट्टाचार्य भी काम कर रहे थे। समाज चित्र, बम्बई के बैनर में बनी इस फ़िल्म का निर्देशन के.डी.काटकर और ए.आर.ज़मींदार की जोड़ी ने किया था, कलाकार थे बी.नान्द्रेकर, सुरेखा, एच.प्रकाश, फ़ैयाजबाई, निम्बालकर, सैम्सन और शबनम, और मुंशी फरोग़ का लिखा और लता का गाया गीत सब्ज़े की दुर्फ़िशानी, फूलों का शामियाना उस दौर में ख़ासा मशहूर हुआ था। बाक़ी नौ गीत अमीरबाई कर्नाटकी, एन.सी.भट्टाचार्य और ए.आर.ओझा के स्वरों में थे। फ़िल्म बिहारी साल 1948 में प्रदर्शित हुई थी। साल 1948 में ही उनकी एक और फ़िल्म किसकी जीत प्रदर्शित हुई थी। इस फ़िल्म का निर्माण भी तिवारी प्रोडक्शन के बैनर में ही हुआ था, निर्देशक थे सफदर मिर्ज़ा और मुख्य कलाकार सादिक़, इंदु कुलकर्णी, पुष्पा, मक़बूल, अमीना बाई, चन्द्रिका और तिवारी। गीतकार थे कुमार शर्मा।
मराठी नाटकों के अलावा इण्डियन नेशनल थिएटर के बैले-नृत्यों के संगीत ने भी रामकृष्ण शिंदे को ख़ासी लोकप्रियता दी और फिर एक समय ऐसा आया जब उनका नाम बैले-नृत्य संगीत का पर्याय बन गया। अपने जीवनकाल में उन्होंने कुल 27 बैले-नृत्यों का संगीत संयोजन किया जिनके देश-विदेश में हुए प्रदर्शनों को भरपूर सराहना मिली। ये उनके बैले-संगीत का ही कमाल था कि निर्देशक अमेय चक्रवर्ती ने उन्हें साल 1950 में बनी अपनी फ़िल्म गौना के एक नृत्य के संगीत के संयोजन की ज़िम्मेदारी सौंपी थी। हालांकि इस फ़िल्म के संगीतकार हुस्नलाल-भगतराम थे लेकिन उषाकिरण पर फ़िल्माए गए उस नृत्य-संगीत के लिए ख़ासतौर से रामकृष्ण शिंदे को बुलाया गया था।
रामकृष्ण शिंदे की बड़ी बेटी रागिनी बताती हैं कि कुछ फ़िल्में ऐसी थीं जिनके लिए शिंदे ने गीत रेकॉर्ड किए लेकिन वो फ़िल्में अधूरी रह गयीं। इनमें राज थिएटर के बैनर की चालीस के दशक की हमारी कहानी और पचास के दशक की चित्र शिखर की अविनाश, शंकर प्रोडक्शन की सती महानन्दा, ए.करीम प्रोडक्शंस की जन्नत की हूर के अलावा एक फ़िल्म पीली कोठी भी शामिल है जिसके लिए शिंदे ने दो गीत रेकॉर्ड किए थे। ऐसी ही एक अन्य फ़िल्म थी पातालदेवता जिसमें अभिनेत्री मुमताज़ ने पहली बार कैमरे का सामना किया था। ये फ़िल्म अगर बनकर प्रदर्शित हो जाती तो ये मुमताज़ की पहली फ़िल्म कहलाती।

शिंदे ने दो मराठी फिल्मों में भी संगीत दिया था। ये थीं साल 1966 में बनी तोची साधु ओळाखावा और 1970 में बनी आई आहे शेतात, जिसका निर्माण भी शिंदे ने ही किया था। इसके अलावा उन्होंने ऑल इण्डिया रेडियो के भी कुछ कार्यक्रमों में संगीत दिया था जिनमें होनाजी बाला, बिल्ली मौसी की फजीहत, सोना और सात बौने, मानसी और उषा मुस्काई को बेहद सराहा गया।

रामकृष्ण के साथ शुरू हुआ सिनेमा से शिंदे परिवार का जुड़ाव रामकृष्ण के साथ ही ख़त्म भी हो गया। इस क्षेत्र की भयावह आर्थिक अनिश्चितताओं को देखते हुए उनकी पत्नी नलिनी को नौकरी करनी पड़ी। क़रीब तीस साल उन्होंने एक सरकारी स्कूल में शिक्षिका के रूप में कार्य किया और नौकरी के बलबूते पर ही दोनों बेटियों की शादियां अच्छे घरों में कीं। उनकी बड़ी बेटी रागिनी के पति विलास अंधारे महाराष्ट्र सरकार के प्रकाशन विभाग महाराष्ट्र ग्रंथ निर्मिति मंडल के निदेशक पद से, तो छोटी बेटी अनुराधा के पति हेमंत शेण्डे चालीस साल की नौकरी के बाद क़रीब एक साल पहले देना बैंक से सेवानिवृत्त्त हुए हैं। नलिनी 83 वर्ष की हो चली हैं और अब उनका समय कभी घोड़बंदर रोड ठाणे में बड़ी बेटी रागिनी के परिवार साथ तो कभी वर्ली, मुंबई के ख़ान अब्दुल गफ़्फ़ार ख़ान रोड पर रहने वाली छोटी बेटी अनुराधा के परिवार साथ गुज़रता है।

हिन्दी सिनेमा ने भले ही रामकृष्ण शिंदे यानि कि हेमंत केदार को उनका पूरा हक़ न दिया दो लेकिन बैले –संगीत ने उन्हें ज़बर्दस्त पहचान दी। 14 सितम्बर 1985 को जब हार्ट अटैक से उनका निधन हुआ तो उस वक़्त भी वो राजा ढाले के बैले चाण्डालिका और दूरदर्शन के लिए अजित सिन्हा के बैले ऋतुचक्र के संगीत पर काम कर रहे थे।
