"Dekh Lo Ishq Ka Martaba Dekh Lo" - B S Thapa

B.S. Thapa! I was very impressed with this name which I used to hear since my childhood though neither had I met nor did I personally know that person. The only thing I knew was that one B.S. Thapa of my native city lived in Mumbai and was a film maker. His association with films was the only reason of my being impressed with him. Years later I also became a part of the Mumbai metropolis. 

I first met with Thapa ji in the year 2002 through well-known poster collector, presently the Vice President of Osian’s auction house & an integral part of Beete Hue Din, Mr. S M M Ausaja at the Gemini Studio, MIDC-Andheri (East) where Mr. Ausaja was working as an executive producer. Thapa ji was serving with Gemini Studio’s film school The Digital Academy as an acting, scripting & direction teacher and I was working as a researcher-writer for the documentaries being produced by Gemini Studio on various film veterans.

  
Soon I became very close to B.S. Thapa ji.  Besides being from the same city, Thapa ji’s friendly behaviour was another reason behind our closeness. We often met at the Digital Academy and the centre of our discussion used to be the history of Hindi cinema as well as our city. But some time later B.S. Thapa ji left Digital Academy to join Zee T.V. group’s film school Zima and I lost all the contact with him. 

Years later, one fine day I saw Thapa ji near my home in 2010. I met him with all the warmth but may be due to his age, Thapa ji failed to recognize me. Though he tried his best to keep himself normal still I could clearly sense his confusion. During our conversation I came to know that he, along with his wife had recently shifted from four bungalows, Andheri to Mira Road and was residing in Versha Tower, located behind my building. He invited me to his home and promised that he would also visit my home soon. We met a couple of times again but neither could I visit his place nor could he fulfil his promise to me. 

When I tried to interview B.S. Thapa ji for Beete Hue Din which was founded in the year 2012, I came to know that he had already shifted from Versha Tower around 2 years back. But no one could tell me about his present whereabouts. I didn’t even have his mobile number. I kept on searching for him and in this process I personally went to the offices of The Digital Academy, The Documentary Film Maker’s Association at the Famous Studio at Mahalaxmi & The Film & TV Director’s Association at Andheri and enquired about B.S. Thapa ji but all in vein. Considering his age, even negative thoughts started pouring in my mind. But suddenly my quest got fulfilled on its own one day.
A couple of months ago I came in contact with a well-known & elderly actor of Gujarati theatre Mr. Mahesh Udeshi and we started meeting regularly. One day we were sitting at a restaurant at Goregaon when Mahesh Udeshi ji got startled to see the elderly waiter who came to us to take the order. In fact, he was a cinematographer who, after working with many renowned cinematographers of their time in big movies as an assistant to chief assistant, had himself shot a couple of movies as an independent cinematographer and was compelled to work as a waiter under the odd circumstances now. 

(To protect his dignity, it is a must to hide his identity and that’s the reason why the names of the movies which he did and / or the names of the cinematographers he worked with are not being revealed here.) 

Due to the presence of many customers in the restaurant and being on duty, he could not talk to us much. But whatever little conversation took place between us, I could easily sense that he had his roots in Nepal. Since Thapa ji was also from the Nepali background, I immediately asked him if he knew film director B.S. Thapa ji? And before he could say something, Mahesh Udeshi ji asked, "Which B.S. Thapa? Of Himalay Se Ooncha fame? But he lives in four bungalows." And my years old quest suddenly got fulfilled. 
Actually Mahesh Udeshi ji’s daughter and B.S. Thapa ji’s daughter Simran Subedi are close friends. When I contacted Simran Subedi with Mahesh Udeshi ji reference, I came to know that she resides at Mira Road, very near to my home only. Finally I succeeded meeting with B.S. Thapa ji with Simran’s help. Thapa ji’s interview took place in 2 sittings. First in the evening of 24 August 2015 at his Four Bungalow-Andheri home and second and the final sitting in the evening of 26 August at Simran’s home at Mira Road. 
    Bir Singh (B.S.) Thapa was born on 3 July 1923 at the Gorkhali Mohalla, New Cantt Road, Dehradoon in a family of Nepali origin. His father served with the British Army and mother was a housewife. B.S. Thapa was youngest among 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Thapa ji says, “Like an ordinary Gorkha family, ours was also a family of soldiers. Apart from my father, my elder brother and husbands of both my sisters were in Army. My second brother, the middle one died very young due to prolonged illness. People expected that as per family tradition I would also join the Army after completing my schooling, but I wanted to study more and more.” 

After passing his 10th from Mission School and 12th from D.A.V. Inter college, B.S. Thapa shifted to Lucknow for higher studies. During his 4 years stay in a hostel in Lucknow, he did B.A. & M.A. (Political Science). He says, “In those times the students of B.A. & M.A. were allowed to do the LLB side by side so I did LLB too. Meanwhile I was married off when I was studying in B.A. My wife Saraswati was from Delhi and was the only child of her parents. Her father had a flourishing business of Tours & Travels. Her mother had died long back and the family consisted of the father-daughter duo only. That’s why I had to shift to Delhi after completing my studies from Lucknow.” B.S. Thapa ji always had an inclination towards cinema. He was very fond of the actor Motilal. While in Lucknow, Mr. Thapa participated in radio plays. After shifting to Delhi he associated himself with theatre as well. He acted in many stage plays. Meanwhile the Government of India announced scholarships for youth to attract them towards cinema. 
B.S. Thapa says, “One of Chetan Anand’s close friends was associated with the theatre in Delhi. He was very impressed with my clear speech and artistic inclination and he always said that I was made for cinema only. He introduced me to Chetan Anand. I expressed my desire to Chetan Anand to work with him but he clearly said, ‘I’ll take you with me only if you get the scholarship otherwise won’t.’ Luckily I got selected for the scholarship. I was asked by the Government of India the name of the film maker who I wanted to join. And considering my desire, I was sent to Chetan Anand. Thus I shifted from Delhi to Mumbai in the year 1949. Chetan Anand was making the film Afsar at that time which I joined him in as an apprentice.”  (Mr. B.S. Thapa is now 92 years old. The obvious effect of age on his memory clearly reflects now. Recollecting things troubles him a lot and he doesn’t even remember many important things now. That was the reason, we had to interview him in 2 sittings. We also had to speak to Mr. S M M Ausaja and Mr. Jay Shah who were Thapa ji’s close associates to confirm many facts.) 

After Mr. S M M Ausaja left Gemini Studio - Digital Academy, Mr. Jay Shah, who is presently the Deputy General Manager at the Shemaroo Video, took over. Jay Shah says, “In those days educated people like Thapa ji used to be a rarity in films. Mr. Thapa got the benefit of his degree in LLB. Since he was a good writer as well, whenever there was a court scene in a film, he was especially invited to write the said scene or to guide the writer. Once he was especially invited to Madras by the renowned producer-director of South and the owner of the Madras based Gemini Studio S.S. Vasan for the same purpose. “  (We would like to clear that Madras based Gemini Studio has no connection with the Gemini Studio based at M.I.D.C., Andheri (East) Mumbai and these two are entirely different concerns with entirely different ownership.) 

Apart from gathering knowledge about various aspects of film making as an apprentice under Chetan Anand, B.S. Thapa ji also worked as an actor in his films Anjali, Arpan (both 1957) and Kinare Kinare (1963). Thapa ji says, “For the film related work I often visited the composer of Kinare Kinare Jaidev ji’s home at Churchgate. Jaidev ji was also doing Sunil Dutt’s Mujhe Jeene Do at that time. Through him I came in contact with Sunil Dutt who, apart from Mujhe Jeene Do, was making Ye Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke at the same time. Based on Mumbai’s infamous Nanavati case, the movie Ye Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke was a court room drama. Sunil Dutt gave me the responsibility to write all the court scenes of this movie. Ye Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke was also a 1963 release. Here onwards my friendship with Sunil Dutt remained intact forever. I also worked as Sunil Dutt’s associate director in Reshma Aur Shera (1971) which was produced and directed by him only.” B.S. Thapa ji’s debut movie as director Maiti Ghar released in 1966. The main leads of this film were Mala Sinha and C.P. Lohani. Music was composed by Jaidev. Sunil Dutt and Rajendranath were seen in this film as guest artistes and Thapa ji also played an important role in it. This was the first Nepali language film made under a private banner and it proved to be a platinum jubilee hit. The music of Maiti Ghar was also well appreciated by the masses. During the shoot of Maiti Ghar Mala Sinha fell in love with the hero of the film C.P. Lohani and they got married in 1968. 
In the year 1973 B.S. Thapa ji directed Mann Jeete Jag Jeet. In 1974 he directed Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam. Both these Punjabi language movies were produced by the 1950’s & 60’s decade’s renowned composer S. Mohinder in partnership with his cousin and renowned Punjabi poet Kanwar Mahendra Singh Bedi. Himalay Se Ooncha was B.S. Thapa’s first Hindi film which released in the year 1975. This film was produced by Prakash Mehra. 
 

Jay Shah says, “Himalay Se Ooncha was to be shot in the higher areas and glaciers in Kashmir. Due to health reasons it wasn’t possible for Prakash Mehra to shoot at the high altitude. Moreover, he was busy with the shoot of his other movies Khalifa and Hera Pheri (both 1976). Therefore, on behest of the hero of the film Sunil Dutt, Prakash Mehra gave Himalay Se Ooncha to B.S. Thapa ji to direct.“   B.S. Thapa ji’s next Hindi movie was Charandas which released in the year 1977. This movie was also produced by S. Mohinder & Kanwar Mahendra Singh Bedi. With Vikram and Lakshmi in main lead, this movie had Rajesh Roshan as composer. Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra played guest roles in this movie and the qawwali Dekh Lo Ishq Ka Martaba Dekh Lo was pictured on them only. Giving very important information, S M M Ausaja says, “This is the only qawwali ever pictured on Amitabh Bachchan in his career till date. And this is the only qawwali ever sung by Yesudas in his singing career. Sung by Yesudas and Aziz Nazan Qawwal, the Yesudas part of this qawwali was pictured on Amitabh Bachchan whereas Aziz Nazan Qawwal sang for Dharmendra.”
B.S. Thapa ji’s 1980 release Gangadham was a diamond jubilee hit. Apart from directing, Thapa ji also acted in this movie. In the year 1982 he made Lakshmi with Raj Babbar and Reena Roy in the main lead. This film was produced by Reena Roy’s brother Raja Roy. Jay Shah says, “When Laxmi was announced, it was Rajkumar Kohli’s name as director in its publicity. But later B.S. Thapa ji came on board. According to Reena Roy’s sister Barkha Roy, Rajkumar Kohli was too busy directing Badle Ki Aag (1982) to spare time thus the replacement. Released 1-1/2 years after lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi’s death this movie also had 2 Sahir songs with Usha Khanna as composer. This was the last film of Sahir’s career.”
In the 1980’s decade Mr. B.S. Thapa directed 2 more Nepali language movies and the both were silver jubilee hits. These were 1984 release Kanchhi and 1989 release Maya Priti. Apart from this, two of Thapa ji’s stories were made into Telugu language movies Sudigundalu and Maro Prapancham. In 1972 Sudigundalu was awarded with the National Award of the best regional film and Maro Prapancham won A.P. government’s Golden Nandi Award for the year 1973-74. Mr. B.S. Thapa directed another Hindi film Geet Ganga with Arun Govil, Zarina Wahab and Kajal Kiran released in the year 1982. 
 
B.S. Thapa ji’s relation with Prakash Mehra remained intact even after Himalay Se Ooncha’s release. He was the second unit director in Prakash Mehra’s movies Zindagi Ek Juaa (1992) and Baal Brahmachari (1996). 
 

B.S. Thapa ji is known as a good teacher among film fraternity. He has been a teacher to many stars including Vinod Khanna, Leena Chandavarkar, Sanjay Dutt, Karishma Kapoor, Bikram Saluja and Somi Ali to teach them the correct pronunciation of Hindi-Urdu words and proper delivery of dialogue in the initial stage of their respective career. Mr. Thapa was invited by the Digital Academy to give lessons to the students of film making since the time of its founding in May 2002. Mr. Jay Shah took over as Centre Manager in January 2003 after Mr. S M M Ausaja left. When Mr. Shah resigned from his job with Digital Academy in February 2005 to join Zee TV group’s film school Zima as Centre Controller, he took along B.S. Thapa ji as well. Mr. Thapa taught at Zima for next couple of years. 

After his wife Saraswati Thapa’s death, Mr. B.S. Thapa remarried. He has 1 daughter and 3 sons with his first wife. Daughter Reshma lives in Dubai with her family. Thapa ji’s sons Arun, Anil and Akhil are based in Mumbai only and none of them has any connection with the films. Thapa ji’s second wife Pratima was a choreographer. His daughter Simran Subedi is with his second wife only. After serving with Bahrain Airlines for a couple of years, Simran returned to India 4 years back and now lives at Mira Road. Simran’s daughter Deena played an important character of the ill child named Titli in 2006 release Apna Sapna Money Money.  

Simran says, “My Dad could not live very long at Mira Road. After staying at Versha Tower for a year he shifted to some other place at Mira Road. But after my mother’s sudden death in April 2012 he had to shift back to Four Bungalows where he now lives with his second son Anil.” 

B.S. Thapa ji who completed 92 on last 3 July may not be active in films now but his contribution to the Cinema as a teacher and a director can’t be denied with.

Shri B.S. Thapa passed away at the age of 93 at his Andheri (West), Mumbai residence on the morning of 9 August 2016.

बी.एस.थापा ! बचपन से सुनते आए इस नाम से मैं बेहद प्रभावित था, हालांकि न तो कभी मैं उन शख़्स से मिला था और न ही उन्हें पहचानता था। बस इतना जानता था कि मेरे शहर के रहने वाले कोई बी.एस.थापा मुम्बई में रहते हैं और फ़िल्में बनाते हैं। उनका फ़िल्मों से जुड़ा होना ही उनसे मेरे प्रभावित होने की वजह थी। फिर बरसों बाद मैं खुद भी मुम्बई महानगर का हिस्सा बन गया। 

थापा जी से मेरी पहली मुलाक़ात साल 2002 में मशहूर पोस्टर संग्रहकर्ता, वर्तमान में ओसियान कम्पनी के उपाध्यक्ष और ‘बीते हुए दिन’ के अभिन्न अंग श्री एस.एम.एम. औसजा के ज़रिए एम.आई.डी.सी.-अंधेरी (पूर्व) स्थित जैमिनी स्टूडियो में हुई थी जहां श्री औसजा उन दिनों बतौर कार्यकारी निर्माता काम कर रहे थे। थापा जी जैमिनी स्टूडियो के फ़िल्म स्कूल ‘डिजिटल एकैडमी’ में अभिनय, पटकथा लेखन और निर्देशन पढ़ाते थे और मैं जैमिनी स्टूडियो द्वारा विभिन्न फिल्मी हस्तियों पर बनाए जा रहे वृत्तचित्रों का शोध और लेखन कर रहा था।

बी.एस.थापा जी से मैं जल्द ही घुलमिल गया। हमारे एक ही शहर से होने के अलावा थापा जी का दोस्ताना व्यवहार भी इसकी एक बड़ी वजह था। डिजिटल एकैडमी में हम अक्सर मिलते थे और हमारी बातों का केन्द्र हिंदी सिनेमा का इतिहास और हमारा शहर हुआ करते थे। लेकिन कुछ समय बाद बी.एस.थापा जी डिजिटल एकैडमी छोड़कर ज़ी टी.वी. समूह के फ़िल्म स्कूल ‘ज़ीमा’ में पढ़ाने चले गए और हमारा सम्पर्क टूट गया। 

बरसों बाद साल 2010 में एक रोज़ अचानक ही थापा जी मुझे मेरे घर के क़रीब नज़र आए। मैं बेहद गर्मजोशी से उनसे मिला लेकिन शायद उम्र का असर था कि थापा जी मुझे पहचान ही नहीं पाए। हालांकि उन्होंने ख़ुद को संयत रखने की बहुत कोशिश की लेकिन उनका असमंजस मुझसे छिप नहीं पाया। बातचीत में पता चला कि वो कुछ ही दिनों पहले चार बंगला, अंधेरी का इलाक़ा छोड़कर सपत्नीक मीरा रोड पर रहने आ गए हैं और हमारी बिल्डिंग के पीछे मौजूद वर्षा टॉवर में रहते हैं। उन्होंने मुझे अपने घर आने का न्यौता दिया और वादा किया वो भी जल्द ही मेरे घर पर आएंगे। उनसे 2-3 मुलाक़ातें और भी हुईं लेकिन न तो मैं उनके घर जा पाया और न ही वो अपना वादा निभा पाए।
 

साल 1912 में ‘बीते हुए दिन’ की शुरूआत के साथ ही मैंने बी.एस.थापा जी का इंटरव्यू करना चाहा तो पता चला वो डेढ़-दो साल पहले ही वर्षा टॉवर छोड़ चुके हैं। वो कहां गए और अब कहां हैं, इस बात का पता किसी को नहीं था। उनका मोबाईल नम्बर भी मेरे पास नहीं था। मैं लगातार उन्हें तलाशता रहा। डिजिटल एकैडमी और महालक्ष्मी स्थित फ़ेमस स्टूडियो में ‘डॉक्यूमेंटरी फ़िल्म प्रोड्यूसर्स एसोसिएशन’ से लेकर अंधेरी स्थित ‘फ़िल्म एंड टी.वी. डायरेक्टर्स एसोसिएशन’ के ऑफ़िसों तक में जाकर पूछताछ की लेकिन  बी.एस.थापा जी के बारे में कुछ भी पता नहीं चल पाया। उनकी उम्र को देखते हुए मन में नकारात्मक विचार भी आने लगे थे। लेकिन अचानक ही एक रोज़ मेरी तलाश ख़ुद-ब-ख़ुद पूरी हो गयी।

कुछ ही महिनों पहले गुजराती नाटकों के जाने-माने अभिनेता, वयोवृद्ध श्री महेश उदेशी जी से मेरा सम्पर्क हुआ और हमारा मिलना-जुलना शुरू हो गया। एक रोज़ हम दोनों गोरेगांव के एक रेस्टोरेंट में बैठे थे कि ऑर्डर लेने आए उम्रदराज़ वेटर को देखकर महेश उदेशी जी चौंक पड़े। वो वेटर दरअसल एक सिनेमैटोग्राफर थे जो अपने दौर के कई नामी सिनेमैटोग्राफ़रों के साथ असिस्टेंट से लेकर चीफ़ असिस्टेंट तक कई बड़ी फ़िल्में करने के बाद स्वतंत्र रूप से भी कुछ फ़िल्में कर चुके थे। लेकिन बदले हालात ने उन्हें वेटर का काम करने पर मजबूर कर दिया था। 

(उनका सम्मान बनाए रखने के लिए उनकी पहचान को छुपाए रखना ज़रूरी है और इसीलिए उनकी फ़िल्मों और उनसे जुड़े तमाम वरिष्ठ सिनेमैटोग्राफ़रों के नामों का ख़ुलासा करना उचित नहीं होगा।)
रेस्टोरेंट में ग्राहकों की भीड़ और ड्यूटी पर होने की वजह से वो हमसे ज़्यादा बात नहीं कर पाए। लेकिन जितनी भी बातचीत हुई, उससे मुझे पता चल चुका था कि वो नेपाली मूल के हैं। चूंकि थापा जी भी नेपाली मूल के थे इसलिए मैंने तुरंत उन वेटर से पूछा, क्या वो डायरेक्टर बी.एस.थापा जी को जानते हैं? और उनके कुछ कहने से पहले ही महेश उदेशी जी बोल पड़े, कौन बी.एस.थापा? ‘हिमालय से ऊंचा’ वाले? वो तो चार बंगला में रहते हैं। और मेरी बरसों की तलाश एकाएक पूरी हो गयी। 

दरअसल महेश उदेशी जी की बेटी और बी.एस.थापा जी की बेटी सिमरन सुबेदी क़रीबी दोस्त हैं। महेश उदेशी जी के ज़रिए मेरा सम्पर्क सिमरन सुबेदी से हुआ तो पता चला वो मीरा रोड पर मेरे घर के पास ही रहती हैं। आख़िर सिमरन के ज़रिए मैं बी.एस.थापा जी तक पहुंचने में कामयाब हो ही गया। थापा जी का इंटरव्यू दो बैठकों में हुआ। 24 अगस्त 2015 की शाम चार बंगला-अंधेरी स्थित उनके घर पर और 26 अगस्त की शाम मीरा रोड में, सिमरन के घर पर।

3 जुलाई 1923 को गोरखाली मौहल्ला, न्यू कैंट रोड, देहरादून के एक नेपाली मूल के परिवार में जन्मे बीर सिंह (बी.एस.) थापा के पिता ब्रिटिश फ़ौज में थे और उनकी मां साधारण गृहिणी थीं। 2 बहनों और 3 भाईयों में बी.एस.थापा सबसे छोटे थे। थापा जी कहते हैं, “एक आम गोरखा परिवार की तरह हमारा परिवार भी फ़ौजियों का था। पिता के अलावा मेरी दोनों बहनों के पति और मेरे बड़े भाई भी फ़ौज में थे। मेरे मंझले भाई का युवावस्था में ही लम्बी बीमारी से निधन हो गया था। मुझसे भी यही उम्मीद की जाती थी कि स्कूली पढ़ाई पूरी करने के बाद मैं भी फ़ौज में भर्ती हो जाऊंगा। लेकिन मैं ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा पढ़ना चाहता था।“ 
 
देहरादून के मिशन स्कूल से 10वीं और डी.ए.वी.इंटर कॉलेज से 12वीं करने के बाद आगे की पढ़ाई के लिए बी.एस.थापा लखनऊ चले गए। 4 साल लखनऊ में, हॉस्टल में रहकर उन्होंने बी.ए. और एम.ए. (पॉलिटिकल साईंस) की पढ़ाई की। वो बताते हैं, “उस ज़माने में बी.ए.-एम.ए. की पढ़ाई के साथ साथ एल.एल.बी. भी किया जा सकता था सो उन चार सालों में मैंने एल.एल.बी. भी कर लिया। उधर बी.ए. करते करते मेरी शादी कर दी गयी। पत्नी सरस्वती दिल्ली की थीं और माता-पिता की इकलौती संतान थीं। उनके पिता का टूर्स एण्ड ट्रैवल्स का काफ़ी बड़ा कारोबार था। उनकी मां बहुत पहले गुज़र चुकी थीं और घर में सिर्फ़ वो और उनके पिता थे, इसलिए लखनऊ से पढ़ाई पूरी करने के बाद मुझे दिल्ली आ जाना पड़ा।“

सिनेमा की ओर बी.एस.थापा जी का रूझान हमेशा से ही था। मोतीलाल उनके पसंदीदा अभिनेता थे। लखनऊ में श्री थापा रेडियो नाटकों में हिस्सा लेते थे और दिल्ली आने पर वो रंगमंच से भी जुड़ गए। उस दौरान उन्होंने कई नाटकों में अभिनय किया। उन्हीं दिनों युवाओं को सिनेमा की ओर आकर्षित करने के लिए भारत सरकार की ओर से स्कॉलरशिप की घोषणा की गयी। 
 
बी.एस.थापा बताते हैं, “चेतन आनंद के एक दोस्त दिल्ली में रंगमंच से जुड़े हुए थे। मेरी साफ़ ज़ुबान और कलात्मक रूझान को देखते हुए वो कहते थे कि तुम सिनेमा के लिए बने हो। उन्होंने मुझे चेतन आनंद से मिलवाया। मैंने चेतन आनंद से उनके साथ काम करने की इच्छा ज़ाहिर की तो उन्होंने साफ़ शब्दों में कह दिया, मैं तुम्हें अपने साथ तभी रखूंगा अगर तुम्हें स्कॉलरशिप मिलेगी, वरना नहीं। किस्मत से मुझे स्कॉलरशिप के लिए चुन लिया गया। भारत सरकार की ओर से पूछा गया कि मैं किस फिल्मकार के साथ काम करना चाहूंगा? और मेरी इच्छा को देखते हुए मुझे चेतन आनंद के पास भेज दिया गया। इस तरह साल 1949 में मैं दिल्ली से मुम्बई चला आया। उन दिनों चेतन आनंद फ़िल्म ‘अफ़सर’ बना रहे थे जिसमें मैं बतौर एप्रेंटिस काम सीखने लगा।“

(92 साल के हो चुके श्री बी.एस.थापा की याददाश्त पर उम्र का स्वाभाविक असर साफ़ नज़र आता है। पुरानी बातों को याद करने में उन्हें बहुत परेशानी होती है और बहुत सी बातें अब उन्हें याद भी नहीं रहीं। यही वजह है कि उनका इंटरव्यू हमें दो सिटिंग्स में करना पड़ा। कई तथ्यों की पुष्टि के लिए हमें थापा जी के निकट सहयोगी रह चुके श्री एस.एम.एम.औसजा और श्री जय शाह से भी सम्पर्क करना पड़ा।)    
श्री एस.एम.एम.औसजा के बाद जैमिनी स्टूडियो-डिजिटल एकैडमी में उनकी जगह श्री जय शाह आ गए थे जो वर्तमान में ‘शेमारू वीडियो’ में डिप्टी जनरल मैनेजर के पद पर हैं। जय शाह बताते हैं, “उस ज़माने में फ़िल्मों में थापा जी जैसे पढ़े-लिखे लोग कम ही हुआ करते थे। श्री थापा को अपनी कानून की डिग्री का बहुत लाभ मिला। चूंकि वो एक अच्छे लेखक भी थे इसलिए जब भी किसी फ़िल्म में कोर्ट सीन होता था तो उस सीन को लिखवाने या सलाह लेने के लिए फ़िल्मकार थापा जी को ही याद करते थे। इसी सिलसिले में दक्षिण भारत के मशहूर निर्माता-निर्देशक और मद्रास स्थित जैमिनी स्टूडियो के मालिक एस.एस.वासन ने भी एक बार थापा जी को ख़ासतौर से मद्रास बुलाया था।“ 
 
(यहां हम स्पष्ट करना चाहेंगे कि मद्रास स्थित ‘जैमिनी स्टूडियो’ का एम.आई.डी.सी.-अंधेरी (पूर्व), मुम्बई स्थित ‘जैमिनी स्टूडियो’ के साथ कोई भी रिश्ता नहीं है। दोनों बिल्कुल अलग संस्थान हैं और दोनों के ही मालिक भी अलग अलग हैं।) 

चेतन आनंद के साथ रहकर फ़िल्म निर्माण के विभिन्न पहलुओं को समझने के अलावा बी.एस.थापा जी ने उनकी ‘अंजलि’, ‘अर्पण’ (दोनों 1957) और ‘किनारे किनारे’ (1963) जैसी फिल्मों में अभिनय भी किया। थापा जी बताते हैं, “फ़िल्म ‘किनारे किनारे’ के संगीतकार जयदेव जी के चर्चगेट स्थित घर पर काम के सिलसिले में अक्सर मेरा जाना-आना होता था। जयदेव उन दिनों सुनील दत्त की फ़िल्म ‘मुझे जीने दो’ का भी संगीत तैयार कर रहे थे। उनके ज़रिए मेरी मुलाक़ात सुनील दत्त से हुई जो ‘मुझे जीने दो’ के साथ ही ‘ये रास्ते हैं प्यार के’ भी बना रहे थे। मुम्बई के ‘नानावटी कांड’ पर बनी ये फ़िल्म एक कोर्ट रूम ड्रामा थी। सुनील दत्त ने इस फ़िल्म के तमाम कोर्ट सीन लिखने की ज़िम्मेदारी मुझे दी। यहां से सुनील दत्त के साथ हुई मेरी दोस्ती हमेशा ही बनी रही। ‘ये रास्ते हैं प्यार के’ भी साल 1963 में रिलीज़ हुई थी। आगे चलकर मैंने सुनील दत्त द्वारा निर्मित और निर्देशित फ़िल्म ‘रेशमा और शेरा’ (1972) में एसोसिएट डायरेक्टर की ज़िम्मेदारी निभाई।“
साल 1966 में बी.एस.थापा जी की बतौर निर्देशक पहली फ़िल्म ‘माईती घर’ रिलीज़ हुई। इस फिल्म की मुख्य भूमिकाओं में माला सिंहा और सी.पी.लोहानी थे। संगीत जयदेव का था। अभिनेता सुनील दत्त और राजिंदर नाथ इस फ़िल्म में मेहमान कलाकार थे और इसमें थापा जी ने भी एक अहम भूमिका निभाई थी। नेपाली भाषा की, प्राईवेट बैनर में बनी यह पहली फ़िल्म प्लैटिनम जुबली हिट थी और इसके गीत भी बहुत पसंद किए गए थे। ‘माईती घर’ की शूटिंग के दौरान ही माला सिंहा और सी.पी.लोहानी में मोहब्बत हुई थी और साल 1968 में उन्होंने शादी कर ली थी। साल 1973 में बी.एस.थापा जी ने फ़िल्म ‘मन जीते जग जीत’ और 1974 में ‘दु:ख भंजन तेरा नाम’ का निर्देशन किया। पंजाबी भाषा की इन दोनों फ़िल्मों का निर्माण 1950 और 60 के दशक के मशहूर संगीतकार एस.मोहिंदर ने अपने मौसेरे भाई और मशहूर पंजाबी कवि कंवर महेन्द्र सिंह बेदी के साथ मिलकर किया था। साल 1975 में बी.एस.थापा जी द्वारा निर्देशित पहली हिंदी फ़िल्म ‘हिमालय से ऊंचा’ प्रदर्शित हुई। इस फ़िल्म का निर्माण प्रकाश मेहरा ने किया था। 

जय शाह बताते हैं, “फ़िल्म ‘हिमालय से ऊंचा’ की तमाम शूटिंग कश्मीर के ऊपरी इलाक़ों में और ग्लेशियरों में की जानी थी। प्रकाश मेहरा के लिए स्वास्थ्य-कारणों से उतनी ऊंचाई पर शूटिंग कर पाना सम्भव नहीं था। साथ ही वो ‘ख़लीफ़ा’ और ‘हेराफेरी’ (दोनों 1976) जैसी फ़िल्मों की शूटिंग में भी व्यस्त थे। इसी वजह से फ़िल्म के हीरो सुनील दत्त के आग्रह पर उन्होंने ‘हिमालय से ऊंचा’ के निर्देशन की ज़िम्मेदारी बी.एस.थापा जी को सौंप दी।“
 
साल 1977 में बी.एस.थापा जी द्वारा निर्देशित फ़िल्म ‘चरणदास’ प्रदर्शित हुई। इस फ़िल्म का निर्माण भी कंवर महेन्द्र सिंह बेदी और एस.मोहिंदर ने पार्टनरशिप में किया था। विक्रम और लक्ष्मी की मुख्य भूमिकाओं वाली इस फ़िल्म में राजेश रोशन का संगीत था। अमिताभ बच्चन और धर्मेन्द्र इस फ़िल्म में मेहमान कलाकार के तौर पर नज़र आए थे। फ़िल्म की क़व्वाली ‘देख लो इश्क़ का मरतबा देख लो’ इन्हीं दोनों पर फ़िल्माई गयी थी। इस संदर्भ में एक महत्वपूर्ण सूचना देते हुए एस.एम.एम.औसजा कहते हैं, “अमिताभ बच्चन के अब तक के करियर में उन पर फ़िल्माई गयी ये अकेली क़व्वाली है। येसुदास ने भी अपने पूरे करियर सिर्फ़ यही एक क़व्वाली गायी है। येसुदास और अज़ीज़ नाज़ां क़व्वाल की गायी इस क़व्वाली में येसुदास ने अमिताभ के और अज़ीज़ नाज़ां ने धर्मेन्द्र के लिए प्लेबैक दिया है।“

साल 1980 में प्रदर्शित हुई डायमण्ड जुबली हिट फ़िल्म ‘गंगाधाम’ के निर्देशन के साथ साथ बी.एस.थापा जी ने इसमें अभिनय भी किया था।  साल 1982 में उनके द्वारा निर्देशित फ़िल्म ‘लक्ष्मी’ प्रदर्शित हुई। राज बब्बर और रीना रॉय की मुख्य भूमिकाओं वाली इस फ़िल्म का निर्माण रीना रॉय के भाई राजा रॉय ने किया था। जय शाह बताते हैं, “जब फ़िल्म ‘लक्ष्मी’ अनाऊंस की गयी तो पब्लिसिटी में निर्देशक के तौर पर राजकुमार कोहली का नाम दिया गया था। लेकिन बाद में उनकी जगह बी.एस.थापा आ गए। रीना रॉय की बहन बरखा रॉय के अनुसार इसका कारण उन दिनों राजकुमार कोहली का, फ़िल्म ‘बदले की आग’ (1982) के निर्देशन में व्यस्त होना था। गीतकार साहिर लुधियानवी के निधन के क़रीब डेढ़ साल बाद प्रदर्शित हुई फ़िल्म ‘लक्ष्मी’ में उषा खन्ना का संगीत था और इसमें साहिर के लिखे 2 गीत थे। ये साहिर के करियर की आख़िरी फ़िल्म थी।“
 
1980 के दशक में श्री बी.एस.थापा ने 2 और नेपाली फ़िल्मों का निर्देशन भी किया और दोनों ही सिल्वर जुबली हिट हुईं। ये फ़िल्में थीं, साल 1984 में बनी ‘कांछी’ और 1989 की ‘माया प्रीति’। थापा जी की लिखी कहानियों पर 2 तेलुगू फ़िल्मों ‘सुदीगुन्दालू’ और ‘मारोप्रपंचम’ का भी निर्माण किया गया था। साल 1972 में बनी ‘सुदीगुन्दालू’ को सर्वश्रेष्ठ क्षेत्रीय फ़िल्म का राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार मिला था तो ‘मारोप्रपंचम’ को साल 1973-74 के, आन्ध्रप्रदेश सरकार के गोल्डन नन्दी पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया था। साल 1982 में श्री बी.एस.थापा के निर्देशन में बनी फ़िल्म ‘गीतगंगा’ प्रदर्शित हुई थी। इस फ़िल्म में अरूण गोविल, ज़रीना वहाब और काजल किरण की मुख्य भूमिकाएं थीं। 

प्रकाश मेहरा के साथ बी.एस.थापा जी के रिश्ते फ़िल्म ‘हिमालय से ऊंचा’ के बाद भी बने रहे। प्रकाश मेहरा की फ़िल्मों ‘ज़िंदगी एक जुआ’ (1992) और ‘बाल ब्रह्मचारी’ (1996) में बी.एस.थापा सेकण्ड यूनिट डायरेक्टर थे।
 
फ़िल्मोद्योग में बी.एस.थापा जी को एक अच्छे शिक्षक तौर पर भी पहचाना जाता है। उन्होंने विनोद खन्ना, लीना चंदावरकर, संजय दत्त, करिश्मा कपूर, बिक्रम सलूजा और सोमी अली जैसे कई सितारों को उनके करियर के शुरूआती दौर में हिंदी-उर्दू शब्दों के सही उच्चारण और संवाद अदायगी की शिक्षा दी। मई 2002 में जब ‘डिजिटल एकैडमी’ की स्थापना हुई तो छात्रों को पढ़ाने के लिए थापा जी को आमंत्रित किया गया। जनवरी 2003 में श्री एस.एम.एम.औसजा के बाद श्री जय शाह ने बतौर सेंटर मैनेजर डिजिटल एकैडमी का कामकाज सम्भाला था। फ़रवरी 2005 में डिजिटल एकैडमी छोड़कर वो बतौर सेंटर कण्ट्रोलर ज़ी टी.वी समूह के फ़िल्म स्कूल ‘ज़ीमा’ में गए तो उन्होंने बी.एस.थापा जी को भी ‘ज़ीमा’ में बुला लिया, जहां श्री थापा अगले कुछ सालों तक पढ़ाते रहे।

पत्नी सरस्वती थापा के निधन के बाद श्री बी.एस.थापा ने दूसरा विवाह किया था। पहली पत्नी से थापा जी के 1 बेटी और 3 बेटे हैं। बेटी रेशमा अपने परिवार के साथ दुबई में रहती हैं और तीनों बेटे अरूण, अनिल और अखिल और उनके परिवार मुम्बई में ही हैं। इनमें से किसी का भी सिनेमा से रिश्ता नहीं है। थापा जी की दूसरी पत्नी प्रतिमा कोरियोग्राफ़र थीं। उनकी बेटी सिमरन सुबेदी इन्हीं दूसरी पत्नी से हैं। सिमरन कुछ साल बहरीन एयरलाईंस में नौकरी करने के बाद 4 साल पहले भारत लौट आयी थीं और अब मीरा रोड पर रहती हैं। सिमरन की बेटी डीना ने साल 2006 में प्रदर्शित फ़िल्म ‘अपना सपना मनी मनी’ में बीमार बच्ची ‘तितली’ की एक अहम भूमिका की थी।  

सिमरन बताती हैं, “पिताजी मीरा रोड पर ज़्यादा दिन नहीं रह पाए। वर्षा टॉवर में एक साल रहने के बाद वो मीरा रोड पर ही किसी और इलाक़े में रहने चले गए थे। लेकिन अप्रैल 2012 में मां के आकस्मिक निधन की वजह से उन्हें वापस चार बंगला लौट जाना पड़ा जहां वो अब मंझले बेटे अनिल के साथ रहते हैं।“

बीते 3 जुलाई को 92 साल के हो चुके श्री बी.एस.थापा जी आज भले ही फ़िल्मों में सक्रिय न हों लेकिन एक शिक्षक और निर्देशक के तौर पर फ़िल्मों में उनके योगदान के महत्व को नकारा नहीं जा सकता।   

श्री बी.एस.थापा का निधन 93 साल की उम्र में दिनांक 9 अगस्त 2016 की सुबह उनके अंधेरी (पश्चिम), मुम्बई स्थित निवास पर हुआ।
