Mahesh was a poor rickshawwala; his only worldly possession being the cycle rickshaw which he plied from dawn to night. He lived in slums where also dwelt Sheela. Mahesh, one day, hoped to make Sheelahis wife. Yet fate willed otherwise.
One day, he found himself saddled with a tiny child. Not knowing what to do, he tried to get rid of the baby, but without success. Accepting the inevitable, he became the child’s guardian, and the child a most dear part of Mahesh’s life. He would take the child everywhere; but again, when everything seemed so happy, the child was struck down witch dreaded polio. Mahesh felt that he had neglected the child, and this had resulted in the illness; he vowed to sacrifice his everything to bring up the child in a proper manner and to educate the child so that he would overcome his physical disability.
Thus is set the stage for the story of a bachelor father a man whose entire life is dedicated to the child who is more than his own. Years roll by, till one day the parents of the child discover that their long lost baby is with Mahesh.
Does Mahesh hand over the now grown boy to his own parents? Will the boy accept them? Can Mahesh get over his grief inparting from the boy? These are the problems that send our story spinning towards the climax.
