Sunder Singh was a familiar face in Hindi films, acting in several films from the time he made his debut in the 1930s up to the 1980s. From playing hero to moving to character roles and making his mark as a comedian, he acted in approximately 436 films in both Hindi and Punjabi cinema in the course of his career.
Born on 14 March, 1908 in Lahore, British India, he pursued a career as an actor, his earliest films being Imperial Mail (1939), Dorangia Daku (1940), Sipahi (1941), and Khamoshi (1942). Among the many films to his credit are Shadi Ke Baad (1948), Albela (1951), Dekh Kabira Roya (1957), Chandu (1958), Solva Saal (1958), Insan Jaag Utha (1959), Khiladi (1961), Ayee Milan Ki Bela (1964), Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Upkar (1967), Sadhu Aur Shaitaan (1968), Padosan (1968), Aabroo (1968), Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke (1969), Doli (1969), Anjaana (1969), Bandhan (1969), Bachpan (1970), Aan Milo Sajna (1970), Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong (1971), Mehboob Ki Mehndi (1971), Banphool (1971), Gaon Hamara Shaher Tumhara (1972), Apna Desh (1972), Gora Aur Kala (1972), Naya Din Nai Raat (1974), Pratigya (1975), Damaad (1978), Muqaddar Ka Sikander (1978), Naseeb (1981), Biwi-O-Biwi (1981), Naram Garam (1981), Dard Ka Rishta (1982), Betaab (1983), Humse Naa Jeeta Koi (1983), Sharaabi (1984), Maa Kasam (1985), Arjun (1985), Aap Ke Saath (1986), Dacait (1987), and Bahurani (1989). Some of his notable roles were as Murlidhar in Seema (1955), Bhiku in Howrah Bridge (1958), and Gogi in Solva Saal.
He also acted in several Punjabi films including Madari (1950), Jugni (1952), Bhangra (1959), Do Lachhian (1960), Bhakti Me Shakti (1978), Takkra (1976), Yamla Jatt (1976), Vilayati Babu (1981), and Chann Pardesi (1981).
Sunder Singh also rendered playback for songs in films such as Mastaana (1954), Chandni Chowk (1954), and Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi (1974).
Sunder Singh passed away on 5 March, 1992
