Almost in middle age Raja Sahib's wife gave birth to a male child. On the same day Gypsy Sardar's sister gave birth to a child. The gypsees were celebrating the occasion with liquor brought from the shop of Raja where they one after the other started falling dead from the liquor poisoning. Enraged the Sardar brought the dead bodies to the Haveli of Raja and intrepted merry going on there Infuriated Raja ordered their Basti to be burnt down. In the melee the new born infant also died. The Sardar stole the child of Raja and put it in the lap of this sister before dying.
The child grew up to become SHANKAR a boatman and befriended SHAMBHU a woodcutter who treats Shankar like a brother.

Unknown to each other both fell in love with Reshma- and orphan girl.

Meanwhile wicked munim planted Sharat as the son of Raja when Shambhu discovered that his lady love is coveted by his briend Shankar, he turned his enemy.

Sharat was not content with the newly acquired riches. He wanted to multiply it. He sacked woodcutters and boatman from his Basti. Shambhu assisted Sharat in his evil designs to avenge his humiliation at the hands of Shankar. Events lead Shambhu to the plot of Shankar's murder and evaluation of entire Basti, which is lead to the climax.
