Gulzar and Vinod Khanna, one of the lesser known creative partnerships in cinema, may seem like an odd combination on paper. At the start of this partnership, one was known for his beautiful lyrics and dialogues, while the other was mostly a villain or second lead. But the two came together in the 70s to create a unique set of films. Over the course of three films - Mere Apne (1971), Achanak (1973) and Meera (1979) Gulzar brought out intense yet vulnerable performances from Khanna. Khanna also worked with Gulzar during his comeback phase in Lekin...(1991). These films formed part of Gulzar's subtle deconstruction of the typical male lead of the 70s and Khanna essayed the pain and passion of it all with elan. Cinemaazi presents a trip down memory lane with Gautam Chintamani to take a look at this unique director-actor partnership.
