“Zameen Aasman” is, primarily, a love story. It deals with and describes many kinds of love—the love of a mother and a son; the love of a husband and a wife; the love of a man and a woman; and the helter-skelter love of two teenagers.
Sanjay is a medical student who lives in Ooty, the rich son of an enormously respected widow, Kavita Goyal. Through a series of misadventures he meets Anita, a young tourist from Bombay. They fall hopelessly in love. When Anita’s anty, Dr. Kanchan Nath Gupta, comes to Ooty to collect her, she introduces her aunty to Sanjay. When Dr. Kanchan voices her whole-hearted approval of the boy, there appears no obstacle in the way of a hppy marriage.
When the two youngsters are separated they are desolate, a fact closely observed by Kavita, a devoted mother. She allows her son a quick trip to Bombay during his vacations.
Left alone to her memories, she decides to get her son married to Anita whom he obviously loves so much. She flies to Bombay and goes to meet the girl’s parents.
To everyone’s surpirsie the marriage is not allowed by the girl’s parents or by Kavita Goyal.
An embittered son thereafter leaves the house to discover the dark secret that shadows his existence.
And in the process discovers that the earth and the sky, Zameen and Aasman, do meet—at the horizon, that vision that all can see, but none can reach.
