The film is based on the short story Shikar by Oria writer Bhagabati Charan Panigrahi. Set in 30’s in Orissa (but evoking the Santhal revolt of 1850s), a tribal hunter Ghinua feels a kinship with a middle aged British administrator and they bond over their common passion for hunting. The moneylender Bhuban Sardar pursues and kills a tribal leader and takes his head to the administrator for his reward. When he takes Ghinua’s wife in lieu of compensation, Ghinua tracks him down and kills him. He takes his head back to the administrator, declaring that he has rid the jungle of its most dangerous beast. He is then subjected to the ironic and hypocritical colonial justice.
