Producer-director Sadashiv J Row Kavi was active in Hindi cinema during the 50s and 60s. He is known for producing films such as Hum Panchi Ek Daal Ke (1957), Didi (1959), and Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan (1961). Row Kavi’s production Didi told the story of brother-sister bonding, not in the conventional sentimental way but with wit and hilarity. Starring Sunil Dutt and Shubha Khote, this K Narayan Kale directorial revolved around the sister’s matchmaking plans for her brother. Hum Panchi Ek Daal Ke, starring Romi, Satish Vyas, Mohan Choti, Daisy Irani and Jagdeep in lead roles, won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film. Directed by P L Santoshi, it revolved around a father’s attempts to appropriately discipline his son via a tutor who is actually a circus ringmaster. Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan was both produced and directed by Row Kavi. The film, a sentimental melodrama, starred Meena Kumari and helped established Kumari’s image as the Queen of Tragedy. Row Kavi’s other directorial, Begaana (1963) featured Dharmendra and Supriya Choudhary in the lead roles. The film was a romantic triangle, replete with misunderstandings especially when the wife’s past lover enters the life of a happily married couple.
Sadashiv J Row Kavi passed away on 7 April in 1974.
