Mahesh Kothare started his career as a child artist and appeared in films like, Chhota Bhai (1966), Mere Laal (1966), Raja aur Rank (1969) and Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani (1970). He had a double role in Raja aur Rank. InRajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore film,Safar(1970), he played a collegian and younger brother of Feroze Khan.

Later, Mahesh played as a hero in Marathi and Gujarati films. In the 80s he started producing and directing films and has many successful films to his credit. He is also credit with bringing many technological innovations to Marathi cinema.
