In the lap of the snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas, there is a small beautiful village. In this village lives a girl whose beauty is famous. Her name is Sahibaan (Madhuri Dixit). Sahibaan's beauty is the talk of the village and all the surroundings, her name causes the flowers to bloom and increases the speed of the flow of the river. The entire area smells of her presence.

One day, an innocent youth Gopi (Rishi Kapoor) comes to the village. He plays the flute so well that Sahibaan gets attracted to him and they fall in love. Both of them swear never to leave each other.

In the same valley, lives a handsome young prince Vijay Singh (Sanjay Dutt) who spends all his time drinking and womanising. In spite of all this, he feels lonely and always dreams of a beautiful girl who will share his life. He instructs his Diwan, Durga Singh (Bharat Kapoor) to find her.

One day Vijay Pal Singh spots Sahibaan and decides to marry her. He tries to take her away from Gopi but fails. He then takes Gopi away to a lonely place. Here Gopi meets Tikka (Kiran Kumar's) pretty sister Raj Kumari (Sonu Walia). Tikka hates Vijay Pal Singh and their enmity is generations old. He takes this chance to take revenge on Vijay Pal Singh.

Two young lovers are caught in this web of life and death and they meet with death.

Till today, nobody understands who won and who lost. But in the valley, a silent witness to this love story, between two unmarked graves, sits an old fakir who tells everybody this story. This love story is immortal and lives in everybody's heart even today.
