Aman (Sanjay Dutt) is a handicapped orphan living in Father D'Mello's (Kishore Kapoor) orphanage. He is befriended by Akash (Salman Khan), the son of a wealthy builder Rajiv Rai (Kader Khan). Seeing Aman's attachment to Akash, Raj adopts the former, so that he would get proper care.

Aman and Akash grow up and became totally different personalities. Aman takes to books, while Akash becomes an incorrigible flirt. Aman's poems become rage and his books are written under the pseudonym of 'Saagar'. Pooja (Madhuri Dixit), who is a bookshop owner is obsessed with Saagar's poetry and is in love with him, without even knowing him.

Fate brings Pooja and Saagar together and the latter instantly falls in love with her. However, he does not express his love for her. By a strange coincidence, Akash on a visit to Aman, also bumps into Pooja and is struck by her beauty. When Aman learns that Akash is also in love with Pooja, he decides to sacrifice his love for his friend and tells him to pose as Saagar.

The castles built on stands cannot stay for long and in time, Pooja learns the truth and feels cheated at the hands of Aman. The unending chords of friendship between Aman and Akash are also heavily strained up to a breaking point when Akash learns that Aman was in love with Pooja. Three souls - Aman, Akash and Pooja - are in a turmoil.

The unwinding of the tangle forms the core of Divya Films International's 'SAAJAN'.
