"ROTI KAPADA AUR MAKAAN" is the story of love and romance which overshadows the grim miseries of life. It is the story of hate and anger which lead to separation and violence.

It is the story of 'Sheetal'' (Zeenat Aman) a glamour struck, riches aspiring girl in love with 'Bharat' - of her illusions and her disillusions - of her aspirations and disappointments - of her future and her past.

It is the story of Tulsi (Moushumi Chatterji) a poor labour girl raped by society-nursing the child of 'Roti Kapada Aur Makaan' and in love with 'Bharat'.

It is the story of 'Vijay (Amitabh Buchchan) a rebel youth, crippled by war but resolute in his convictions.

It is the story of happy-go-lucky 'Harnam Singh' (Prem Nath) and his struggle.
