Nagin is a romantic tale of Mala and Sanatan. They belong to two different tribes, Nagis and Ragis, living in the hilly districts of India. The main profession of these tribes is catching snakes and selling poison.

On a Basant Mela day, Ragis find out that they are cheated by Nagis of their profits from the  sale of poison and decide to carry on their trade independedntly. This starts a natural rivalry between the two tribes. A few days before the next Mela day, the Ragis decide to go into the forests to catch snakes without the knowledge of the Nagis.

A member of the Nagi tribe, however, comes to know of this secret plan. But a member of the Ragi group intercepts the Nagi tribesman and shoots an arrow at him. Though wounded, he manages to reach his chief to give out the secret and later dies. Mala, the beautiful daughter of Nagi chief, Bhupal, is under the impression that it was Sanatan, the Ragi Chief's son, who has shot the arrow and swears to kill him with her own arrow.

On the next Mela day, when the rival tribes go to sell poison, they come to blows and Nagis manage to spill the poison collected by Ragis with the help of an elephant. In the meantime, a fire breaks up in the Mela and both the tribesman run away for their lives.

When Bhupal learns that his daughter has fallen in love with Santana, he quickly arranges her bethrithal with Parveer. Sanatan learns this and he rushes to the scene in disguise. BUt he is soon recognised and beaten severely. He is taken as dead and is thrown away near the border of his village.
