Darkness during night comes as a blessing for those who commit crime. On one such night child of Rani Leelavati bestowed upon he by the blessings of Nag Devta, was taken away and thrown to the jaws of death but as the saying goes "When God wants to save someone, nobody can destroy him", he child was saved by Naag Devta. Early in the morning the child was given milk by the mother Cow, and by chance he was seen by Bhanupratap the King of Ratanpur and his minister Virendranath and picked up. The child was named Deepak and was brought up in the house of Virendranath and the entry of Deepak gave light to the house of Virendranath which was till then in darkness.
As Deepak grew up he fell in love with Chhaya the daughter of King Bhanupratap. The parents consented to their marriage. In the marriage pandal, due to a curse of Rishi Shandilya, King Bhanupratap was turned to a stone and it was told that before the Sun sets on the Amavasi day if a golden lotus is placed on head of the king, he would regain his lost life. On this errand he set out along with his friend Sundersingh to the kingdom of Mayavati the magic queen from where he could get the golden lotus from her magic tank. When they reached the place, they were taken to jail for trespass and brought before Mayavati. Mayavati who had all the while great hatred for love, fell in love with Deepak at the first sight, Mayavati's commander along with other soldiers followed Deepak and bitter fight followed and in the fight Deepak fell down from the hill top to the down stream. The golden lotus went out of his hands and was floating in the water. Deepak risked his life and at last with the help of a stray mad woman, he was able to get hold of the golden lotus Chhaya and her mother were overjoyed and tears of joy dropped on their cheeks.
The sound of shehnai started for the wedding, but Mayawati with stern determination to establish her claims on Deepak reached the palace and when she knew that her coaxings were of no effect, she got wild and with the magic turned the figure of Deepak to utter ugliness. But alas, Chhaya who had real love towards Deepak's soul and not his human body, decided to serve him to the last and try to bring him back to his past form through her chastity and sincere efforts. Mayavati was bringing every possible hindrance to Chhaya to achieve her object. Nag Devta had told Chhaya that she could bring back Deepak to his old self by the help of Naag Jyoti and Chhaya started on her errand to get Naag Jyoti. Mayavati who was still stern to take revenge on Deepak was all out to destroy Deepak and Chhaya.
