Focusing on the gender disparity that exists at large in Indian society, Mariola was penned by the director Joe Rose based on his own experiences.

A Goan mother and grandmother are disappointed when a girl child is born into the family, having hoped for a male heir. To fulfill their desires, they dress the girl as a boy. The film outlines the physical and emotional torment the protagonist undergoes as a result of this imposition. It also touches upon the menace of drug peddling.

Shot entirely in Goa, the film was given an ‘A’ rating. It featured a stellar performance by the actress Vinisha Harlankar as the protagonist.
