There is great jubilation and expediency in the family of Brij Mohan Gupta (Utpal Dutt) as his only son Janardhan (Rajnikant) was returning from America after completing a course in business management. But to their shock and surprise, they see Janardhan coming out of the aircraft as a swami wearing saffron robes. It was a great disappointment for Madhu (Rati Agnihotri) because Madhu and Janardhan were to be married immediately on the arrival of Janardhan from States—Madhu tries her best to convert Janardhan into a normal human being, to no avail. To the pleasant surprise of all, one day Janardhan discards his saffron robes and becomes a normal human being, the reason being that he wanted to trace the murderer of his father. Inspector John A. Mendis—his father was an upright police officer but was a pain in the neck of Gajju Seth (Kader Khan). Gajju Seth was a notorious bootlegger and a rowdy—Janardhan further learns that he had a twin brother Jani—Jani was being brought up by Fatima Bi (Dulari) in a far off town—In his efforts to liquidate Janardhan, Gajju Seth foists a murder charge of his right hand man, whom he had killed himself—Janardhan declares that his father’s soul has entered in him—To counteract this Gajju ropes in Jaani—Jaani declares in the court that he was John A. Mendis, who was never killed—Thus the two brothers are pitted against each other for counter purposes—of curse Jaani doesn’t know that Jnnardhan was his twin brother.

Does Jaani come to know that Janardhan was his twin brother?

What happens to the machinations of Gajju Seth?

All this is revealed in a most electrifying climax in “JOHN JANI JANARDHAN
