गोदना भारतीय संस्कृती में सौभाग्य चिन्ह के रूप में है। महिलाऐं अक्सर अपने हाथ पर अपने पति का नाम गुदवा लेती है। जिससे वे आजीवन पति का प्यार पाने की हकदार होती है।

इस परम्परा के अन्तर्गत चंदा जैसी भोलीभाली लड़की को बहुत ही कष्ट झेलना पड़ा। वह अपनी दिवंगत बड़ी बहन के बेटे को माँ की प्यार देने के लिए अपने प्यार की कुर्बानी दे देती है।

माता पिता के आदेश का पालन कर अय्यास बहनोई के साथ विवाह करके उसका नाम हाथ पर गुदवा लेती है। उसका बहनोई सुहागरात के ही दिन अपनी खुशियों में मौत का शिकार हो जाता है।

और फिर चंदा के हाथ का गोदना उसके जीवन का अभिशाप बन जाता है। उसके नारकीय जीवन में एक ऐसी आग भड़क उठती है जिस आग में हंसा, मोती और सूरज सभी जलने लगते हैं।
