Anokhi Raat is the story of one eventful night that reveals the innermost nature of human beings their joys and their sorrows, their fears and their aspirations. It achieves this by juxtaposing various characters against one another in a chance meeting in a big mansion on a rainy night. Every character is what he or she is due to the peculiarities of the circumstances of their lives. Each of them has a grievance against life-his own interpretation of human behaviour.

The main characters of the story are:-

BALDEV:
A notorious dacoit who was once a simple God fearing KHANSAMA in a travellers bungalow on a highway.

PREMA:
A poor orphan girl brought up by a few rich people in an orphanage and bought by one of them in the name of marriage.

RAMA:
A sweet young thing who is about to make similar sacrifice as Prema by agreeing to marry Middle-aged widower in order to save her Dadaji, doyen of old aristocracy from a disaster.

AJAY:
A youthful painter and poet who is forced to take shelter in the old mansion against the elements of nature and exhibits the elements in his own nature.

MADAN:
A middle-aged money lender who wants Rama by way of interest on loan made over to her father.

Prema's husband Rai Saheb-Ramdas the old faithful servant and Baldev's henchmen.

With the coming together of these characters, a bigger storm develops inside the house than one raging outside. The elements are in their full fury and the night seems to prove the night of judgment for occupants of the mansion.
