Mehboob Khan's Mother India (1957) is one of the most significant films in Indian film history. Epitomising the height of Nehruvian idealism, the film has had a long and storied afterlife. But Mother India was not the first incarnation of the story, as Khan remade his own earlier film Aurat (1940) which starred Sardar Akhtar in the role which Nargis later made legendary.
