Born in 1950, Hitendra Ghosh did his schooling at the prestigious Scindia School in Gwalior and passed out in 1967. With music as his passion, demonstrated during his school days, he enrolled for a diploma in cinema from the Film and Television Institute of Pune. He graduated in 1974 after specializing in Creative Sound Designing and Recording for cinema. Post his graduation, he made his debut in the film Nishant (1975) as a sound editor and recordist.
Over the next 4 decades, he edited more than 3500 films – the highest number of films by an individual sound recordist. In 1979, he won the National Film Award for Best Audiography for Junoon (1978) – first of three National awards. He was also awarded the National Award for Ek Pal (1986) and Game (2013). He also won two Filmfare Awards for Best Sound Design – for Shyam Benegal’s Kalyug (1981) and Shashi Kapoor’s Vijeta (1982).
A legend in a relatively niche aspect of cinema, Hitendra Ghosh has made a memorable contribution to sound design, enhancing and refining it with his artistic skills. Over his career, he has worked as a sound recordist, mixer and re-recordist. He was known to be a frequent collaborator of Shyam Bengal, helping shape some of his most significant films. He has also worked with other notable directors like Yash Chopra (Lamhe, 1991; Darr, 1993), Govind Nihalani (Aakrosh, 1980; Ardh Satya, 1983), Satyajit Ray (Ganashatru, 1990) and Aparna Sen (36 Chowringhee Lane, 1981). He was also active in Bengali cinema under the name of Hiten Ghosh in films such as Pathbhola (1986), Guru Dakshina (1987), Agaman (1988) and Apon Amar Apon (1990).
Some of his most notable films include Manthan (1976), Bhumika (1977), 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981), Kalyug (1981), Arth (1982), Saaransh (1984), Arjun (1985), Ek Chadar Maili Si (1986), Pestonjee (1987), Parinda (1989), Agneepath (1990), Saudagar (1991), Baazigar(1993), Swades (2004), Rang de Basanti (2007) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008).
