Bengali singer Aparesh Lahiri hailed from Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Born in 1924, he is credited with being among the talented individuals who contributed to enriched Bengali music in its modern avatar, which began from the middle of the 19th century. He is acclaimed for his flawless and beautiful renditions of songs in modern Bengali music.
Some of his most popular Bengali songs are Ei duniya chiriakhana, Line lagao, Jaler jahaj jal kete jaye, Thak thak pichhu dak, Ei baishakhe oi shakhe, Oi dol dul dole, Ascharya Pradeep ta jallo Aladin among others. He worked with composers like V Balsara, Bhupen Hazarika, Shyamal Mitra and Abhijit Bannerjee. In later years he also sang for his son Bappi Lahiri.
Lahiri is known for rendering songs such as Jaage mera dil soye from Badshah (1954) which had music by Shankar Jaikishan and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri, and Nahin surja nahin jyoti from Subhas Chandra (1966). His songs include duets with Kanan Devi such as Khuli hawa mein udnewala, Koi dil ka ban gaya, Panghat pe madhu, and Yum kisne sikhaya. With Sandhya Mukherjee he rendered Taaron ki roshni mein, and Hum chale nai duniya basane.
Lahiri also composed the tune of the popular satsang bhajan Jai radhe radhe krishna Krishna.
Aparesh was married to Bansuri Lahiri also from Jalpaiguri. Like him, she was also a famous Bengali singer in classical music and Shyama Sangeet. He is also the father of popular singer and music composer, Alokesh better known as Bappi Lahiri. Aparesh is said to have trained his son in each and every aspect of music.
Aparesh Lahiri passed away on 28 May, 1998.
