This is the story of an ideal mother and wife who does all within her means to hold her family together like a well strung necklace. On the other we have the head of the family whose favourite passtime is to try and break the necklace.

Suman (Reema Lagoo) is the wife of successful businessman Mahesh Malhotra (Sadashiv Amrapurkar). Even after 10 years of marriage she had not been blessed with an offspring, due to which one always saw her praying before the family deity. Her prayers are answered but how? Due to an accident in the hospital, her new born baby gest mixed up with the child of a mother who died while delivering. There being no one to claim the other child Suman who also can't identify her new born decides to take both the babies home much against her husband's wishes. Major Bhagwant Singh (Kader Khan) who claims to be the father of the other child also is unable to recognise his child. Suman magnanimously requests major to stay in the house till such time it is known which child is whose. It is well said that God has got his own reasons to 'test' you, even after 20 years Mahesh is unable to know which is his child and to find his true successor has become his permanent obsession. One day he gets a bright idea of taking the help of Kiran (Namrata) his friend's foreign returned daughter to make friends with his sons Narendra (Arshad Warsi) and Surendra (Mukul Dev) and gauge by their characteristics who is his real son. But as luck would have it the three become good friends leading to a love triangle. Suman is also interested in making Kiran the daughter-in-law of the house putting the already puzzled Mahesh in a fix, as he wants Kiran to marry only his real son. Both the boys come to know the reason for Kiran in the eyes of their mother. This leads to Kiran leaving the house broken hearted. Major spills the beans to Suman that the Pearls embedded in the necklace scattering here and there.
