Shobha Devi (Sulbha Deshpande) is a very pious woman, she has two sons elder is Jaswant (Om Puri) who is a renowned shrewd criminal lawyer and younger Vimal (Rakesh Roshan). a young man with a good personality but submissive.
Vimal is in love with Madhu (Supriya Pathak). Madhu is a daughter of well-known advocate Motilal. Madhu and Kavita (Swaroop Sampat) are best of friends. Kavita is the only daughter of Rai Bhadur (Bharat Bhushan) who were once upon a time rich but the time had snatched everything from them, but this never mars the relations between Madhu and Kavita.
Sunil (Naseeruddin Shah) is a poet cum lawyer who loves Kavita more than himself, but in return Kavita only respects him. Vimal’s parents and his brother are in search of a big dowry. Pursuing this greediness a match makes the best bet out of it. As providence may have it the tragedy strikes Vimal is commissioned to marry Kavita expecting a big dowry.
The row starts as Kavita could not get a big dowry, they start torturing Kavita. It is only a vain bid she bears all this as a good girl to safeguard the respect of her old father.
Eventually, Vimal's parents and brothers decides to murder Kavita, Jaswant being an eminent lawyer proves the murder as suicide sources a verdict form law in his favour. Madhu quivered she shivers, what could she do? How could she prove a murder? Her mind stalks for a want. Madhu plans to get married to Vimal she enters the house as an investigator.
Does Madhu seek justice in the house?
The death caused for want of dowry is not a social offence. Can Sunil the advocate prove this act as a heinous crime?
Could Madhu and Sunil change the code of constitution or change the greedy society to save the nation from ill-treatment bestowed on a “BAHU”?
