Prabhakar Gokhale

Film editor, actor and director Prabhakar Gokhale is known for his work in H S Rawail’s Patanga (1949), Kidar Sharma’s Bawre Nain (1950), Ved–Madan’s Aankh Ka Nasha (1956), First Love (1961) and Devendra Goel’s Ada (1951).
Born on 9 November 1919, he went on to edit the film Bawre Nain (1950). Directed by Kidar Nath Sharma, the film starred Raj Kapoor, Geeta Bali, and Vijayalaxmi. The romance drama was cited as an “extraordinary melodrama distinguished by Geeta Bali's innovative acting.” It told the tale of rural sweethearts Chand and Tara, Chand’s move to a town to secure employment, and his long absence which prompts Tara to go in search of him, only to find him with an attractive woman Rajni, who claims she is engaged to marry Chand soon. The songs of the film such as Khayalon mein kisi ke also became popular.
Chitralekha, which he edited in 1964, was also directed by Kidar Nath Sharma. Starring Ashok Kumar, Pradeep Kumar and Meena Kumari, it was based on the 1934 Hindi novel of the same name by Bhagwati Charan Verma about Bijgupta serving under the Maurya Empire and the king Chandragupta Maurya (340 BCE – 298 BCE) and his love for the courtesan Chitralekha. The film’s songs composed by Roshan with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi won applause, such as Sansaar se bhaage phirte ho and Man re tu kaahe na dheer dhare. Incidentally, the film was a remake of Chitralekha (1941), also directed by Kidar Sharma, which was the second-highest grossing Indian film of 1941.
The same year, Gazal (1964), which he had also edited, hit the screens. A romance musical directed by Ved-Madan, it starred Sunil Dutt, Meena Kumari and Prithviraj Kapoor. A Muslim social genre film, it promoted the right of the young generation to marry according to their choice. Featuring music by Madan Mohan with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi, it included ghazals such as Rang aur noor ki baraat, performed by Mohammed Rafi and Naghma o sher ki saugaat by Lata Mangeshkar.
He went on to edit Haye Mera Dil (1968), the Ved-Prakash directed drama starring Kishore Kumar, Kumkum and I S Johar.
The crime actioner Mujrim Kaun (1968), directed by K K Reddy, was the next film he edited. Starring Satyajeet Puri, Rajashree, and Manju, the film was written by N R Chagal.
In 1980, he directed the social genre Marathi film Parivartan. Made by Madhukar Movies, it was produced by Madhukar Kadam, and written by Ram Kelkar. It had cinematography by D K Dhuri, and editing by Ramdas Banavalikar. Music was composed by Datta Dawjekar with lyrics by M D Devkate. The film’s cast comprised Anupama, Rajita Thakur, Jayshree T., Kamini Bhatia, Baban Prabhu, Vasant Shinde, Madhu Apte, Jaikumar, Ratnamala, Ramchandra Varde, Gulab Korgaonkar, Baby Nivedita Joshi, Suneel Kadam, and Pramod Bivalkar. The songs included Sakaal jhaali uth maansa, Veda ha bhunga ghaltoy pinga, Vaaryasarkha paltuya bara kaan, Salwar kudta nako rajasa, Zashi jithe tu dukha nirasha, and Asra malaa nahi uralaa.
