He is known for penning songs such as Har aas ashq baar hai har sans bekarar hai sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Teri tasveer bhi tujh jaisi rendered by Mohammed Rafi, Chale ja rahe hai sung by Manna Dey, Buddham sharanam gachhami by Mohammed Rafi, Rou main gin gin tare crooned by Asha Bhosle, Aaj achanak tut gaye kyu sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Ye bahaar ka sama karaar ka sama sung by Krishna Kalle and Mahendra Kapoor, O mast nazar tu chahe agar sung by Vinod Desai, Ye khaamoshi kyu rendered by Geeta Dutt, and Lo chori pakdi gayi sung by Asha Bhosle, Meena MangeshkarUsha Mangeshkar and Sudha Malhotra. He also wrote and produced the film Kinare Kinare

His prowess at composing Urdu poetry is most evident in the 1963 film Kinare Kinare. It comprised songs such as Teri tasveer bhi tujh jaisi haseen hai lekin, Dekh li teri khudaai bas meraa dil bhar gaya, and Chale jaa rahe hain mohabbat ke maare, kinaare kinaare. One of his best creations was sung by Mukesh to music composed by Jaidev…

Jab gam-e-ishq sataataa hai to hans letaa hoon
Haadasaa yaad jab aataa hai to hans letaa hoon
Jab gam-e-ishq ...
Meri ujadi huyi duniyaa mein tamannaa kaa chiraag
Jab koi aa ke jalaataa hai to hans letaa hoon
Jab gam-e-ishq ...
Koi daavaa nahin fariyaad nahin rang nahin
Raham jab apane pe aataa hai to hans letaa hoon
Jab gam-e-ishq ...

Among the popular ghazals he has penned is Dekh li teri khudai bas mera dil bhar gaya

Banarasi (1962) for which he penned song lyrics, was directed by Arup Guhathakurta, and starred Soumitra Chatterjee, Anup Kumar and Mumtaz Ahmed. The plot revolved around a young woman who is kidnapped and forced to become a courtesan. Years later, she is recognised by her old lover who wishes them to lead a new life together. However, their path is full of challenges.

His production Kinare Kinare, for which he penned songs as well as the story and dialogue, was directed by Chetan Anand. Starring Dev Anand, Meena Kumari and Chetan Anand, the plot revolved around an ailing woman who unknowingly falls for an escaped convict.

A feature in the The Hindu – ‘Blast from the past - Kinare Kinare (1963)’, notes, “Writer-producer Nyaya Sharma's story, together with his own punctuating dialogue and profound lyrics – set to brilliant composition by the highly talented music director Jaidev – could have been converted into any form of mainstream gripping (social, romance, crime, period) script by a professional writer but the lackadaisical manner in which director Chetan Anand developed it turned out to be a lame duck. Even the USP turned into a blunder for it was a reunion of sorts of a successful combination of two brothers – a big star by now and a languishing into monotony director brother, which an admiring producer wanted to bring together.”
