Cinemaazi remembers the great theatre and film actor Vishupant Pagnis on his death anniversary. He was born in small place called Chikodi, near Kolhapur in 1892. He began his acting career with Kolhapur based theatre companies from the age of 10. He became a popular figure in the Marathi theatre scenario having worked with many notable companies like Lalit Kaladarsh. He was a popular artiste known for doing female roles, till he entered into films. When Prabhat Film company planned to make Sant Tukaram early in 1936, Pagnis bagged the role of Tukaram.The film in which he portrayed a soft, kind and loving Tukaram became an International hit, and he became an actor in great demand for Saint films. Vishnupant Pagnis worked in four films in genre of Saint films, namely Sant Tulsidas (1939), Narsi Bhagat (1943), Bhakta Raj (1943) and his last film Mahatma Vidur (1943). He also composed music for films, Sant Janabai (1938) and Sant Tulsidas in Marathi (1939).
