Divya (Neelam) is an extrovert, spritely young free from any responsibilities. Her father Durga Prasad (Satyen Kappu), is a government servant. Durga Prasad gets Divya married to Vijay (Rishi Kapoor) who works as a business manager in a company. Divya was not happy with the marriage, but was compelled to assent because of her father's illness. However, Vijay is very much desirous of providing her with such a home which is full of happiness. But, Divya sees it only as a structure of concrete and bricks- not a home. She views the mangal sutra as just a piece of thread. After all it was an alliance in which she was a partner without her heart in it. Matters reach such a stage that when Vijay wishes to present his wife with a gift. She shocks him by asking him for the gift of a divorce. An upset Vijay demands an explanation. The reason being Suraj (Chunkey Pandey) whom she had loved more than anything and none else could replace him.
Vijay applies for a divorce, which would be granted only after staying together for 1 year. Finally, the day arises for the final verdict of their divorce. Divya now stood at such crossroads, one side was Divya's past love and on the other her present.
