The story is of a brother Boota Ram (V. Gopal) who is always looking for the most suitable match for his only sister Lajo (Nishi). When Lajo was about two years old, her mother died. Boota Ram made a solemn promise to his dying mother that he will bring up Lajo and one day when she grows, he will get Lajo married to the most suitable person. Boota Ram devoted his heart and soul in bringing up Lajo. Lajo is now a grown village belle. But life takes a cruel turn when he finds out that Lajo shows signs of mental health illness and requires psychiatric treatment. Now no one is prepared to marry her after they meet her and see how she behaves. It has become impossible for Boota Ram to fulfill his promise made to his dying mother. 
The film starts with Baisakhi Mela in full swing. A storm disrupts the fair and child Kaka (Geeta) gets separated from his family. Fortunately, he is picked by a rich family of Jalandhar and Shahni (Achla Sachdev) brings her up as her own child. As time passes, Kaka (Karan Dewan) turns out to be a smart handsome young businessman. On the advice of an astrologer, Boota (V. Gopal) visits Jalandhar in search of a match for his sister Lajo (Nishi). Incidentally, he encounters Kaka outside the Jalandhar railway station and on considering him as a prospective match for his sister, brings him to the village. 
After a brief interaction with Lajo, Kaka falls in love with her. Lajo also responds to his advances. Kaka purchases land and a Haveli from Bhagta Shah (Shiv Raj) who has secretly captured the property of his nephew Bholu (Deepak). Bhagta also bribes the Panchayat to turn Bholu out of the village. Bholu swears to take revenge from Bhagta and Kaka. Meanwhile, Sunder, the son of Bhagta finds Kaka and Lajo together. He informs her brother Boota who gets angry with Lajo for compromising the honour of the family. And the village sahukar Karmi Shah, who desires Lajo, creates hurdles in the path of the of lovers. 
He goes to Kaka’s house with an axe to kill Kaka. Kaka tries to pacify Boota through his gentle words and tells him that his sister Lajo is fine and that she behaves like she has psychiatric issues just to avoid marriage. Boota realizes his mistake and agrees to get Lajo married to Kaka.
On the other side, Bholu upon being instigated by Bhagta, attacks Kaka who is seriously injured.  Shahni reaches on time to save him and tells him that Kaka and Bholu are real brothers. The lost family is reunited and Kaka marries Lajo.
