The peace and tranquillity of India is shattered by the Chinese aggression. After this betrayal, many youth of the country join the armed forces and are prepared to face the challenge even at the cost of their lives. Chacha (Heera Lal) migrates to India after losing everything including his little son Deepa in Pakistan during the black days of the Partition. In India, luckily he finds a destitute orphan boy Jagga (Manohar Deepak) of the same age and brings him up as his own son. Jagga is engaged in farming and is known for his hard work and honesty. His friend Shera (Rajender Kapoor) is the village Numbardar, who wants to keep his moustache and family honour at all costs. Shera has a sister Jeeto (Nishi) who is stalked by the village sahukar Ganga Shah (Kharaiti). On many occasions, she gives him a sound beating. One day Jagga visits Shera’s house and he falls in love with Jeetoat first sight.

Though Shera is of marriageable age, he has no money to wed. He cannot afford to take a loan from Ganga Shah, as he wishes to maintain his dignity. At this point, Ganga Shah with an eye on getting Jeeto, tricks Shera to avail of a loan of Rs.5000. With this money, Shera gets married to Bachni (Madhumati). Jeeto understands the evil game of Ganga Shah and always keeps a distance from him. Both the love birds Jagga and Jeeto meet stealthily in the fields or at the village well, till they are noticed by Ganga Shah’s Munshi (Majnu). Munshi reports their affair to the villagers and it becomes the talk of the whole village.

Now Ganga Shah engages the services of hirelings to get back his loan amount from Shera. He manages to steal Shera’s bullocks, rendering him unable to do farming. He even threatens to seize all his belongings in case of nonpayment of the loan. Jagga arranges the money and saves Shera from humiliation. The dejected Ganga Shah thinks of ways to separate Jeeto from Jagga and is successful in creating a rift between Shera and Jagga.

In the meantime, war breaks out and Jagga decides to join the army to serve the motherland. He even convinces Shera to listen to the call of the nation. Both of them proceed to the war front and, during the operation, Jagga is reported killed. After the war is over, Shera returns to his village and breaks the news of Jagga being killed in action. Jeeto suffers a massive shock and loses faith in God. She goes to commit suicide but, on the way, she meets her beloved Jagga, who has lost his arm during the war. The injured Jagga’s face is also mutilated and he pleads with Jeeto to forget him. However, Jeeto is firm in her belief and wants only Jagga to be her life companion.
