Cinemaazi remembers film producer Surinder Kapoor on his death Anniversary. Born on 23rd December 1925 in Peshawar, Kapoor was working for a local newspaper before he moved to Bombay. On the insistence and influence of his cousin Prithviraj Kapoor, he along with his wife came to work in films not knowing what awaited him. In 1960 he got to assist K Asif for the classic film Mughal e Azam. He soon carved his way through producing films, establishing his banner S K International Films. His film Shehzada (1972) starring film star Rajesh Khanna, was a box office disaster. The 1980’s took his production ventures to new heights, making remakes of South Indian films initially which were an instant hit with the Hindi film audience. Films like Hum Paanch (1980), Woh Saat Din (1983), Mr India (1987), Loafer (1996), Judaai (1997), Pukar (2000) were some of his other productions. Incidentally, Surinder Kapoor’s most successful films figured on his son Anil Kapoor’s rising stardom and gave rise to a much loved chemistry with the already popular Sridevi. Kapoor succumbed to a cardiac arrest on this day in 2011. His production and film legacy is continued by his children and now grandchildren.
