Cinemaazi remembers Jikki on her death anniversary

Cinemaazi remembers playback singer Pillavalu Gajapathi Krishnaveni, known as Jikki, on her death anniversary (16 August 2004). Jikki began her career in 1943 by playing a minor role in a Telugu movie named Panthulamma. Noting her musical prowess and lilting mellifluous voice, composer SV Venkatraman invited her to sing in the Tamil film Gnanasoundari (1948). The success of the film turned the actress Krishnaveni into the playback singer Jikki.
Gemini’s SS Vasan introduced her to the Hindi film world by getting her to sing for his production Mr Sampat in 1952. She together with P Leela reigned supreme in the South Indian film world in the early part of the 50s. She sang songs in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, Malayalam and Sinhala languages (the Sinhalese films were produced in Madras during those years).
