Cinemaazi remembers Persis Khambatta on her death anniversary

Although now a forgotten name, Persis Khambatta was a highly acclaimed model, actress, and the first Indian woman to make a mark in the Hollywood film industry. At a time when conventional beauty standards were seldom challenged, the remarkable woman shaved her head for the role of Lieutenant Ilia in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), a role that launched her career as a star of international repute and recognition. She was also the first Indian woman ever to present an Academy Award. Unfortunately, her fame and career was cut short due to a tragic accident, and years later, she passed away on 18th August, 1998, at the age of 49. Today, on her death anniversary, we remember and celebrate her spirited personality and unabashed charm.
