Gaining prominence and popularity as a mushaira poet, Shamim Jaipuri went on to leave his mark as a lyricist in films. He penned lyrics for films such as Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960), Kala Aadmi (1960), Baghi Haseena (1965), Saheli (1965), Raaz (1967), Takht Aur Talwar (1970) and Chetna Do Rahe Par (1981).
Born Muhammad Shamim in 1933 in Jaipur, he received his early education in the erstwhile princely state. Gifted with a literary temperament, he began composing poetry at an early age. Shamim Jaipuri gained popularity essentially at poets’ gatherings. He additionally impressed with the quality of his voice and the art of sing-song recitation. His poetic works acquired maturity as he sought counselling from Aziz Aagahi. Moving to Meerut from Jaipur, Shamim’s circle of influence grew as he interacted with Jigar Moradabadi and Taskeen Qureshi. The classical tone and tenor of his work was considerably influenced by Jigar Moradabadi.
Turning lyricist for films, among the songs that he penned lyrics for are Mujhko is raat ki tanhai mein awaaz na rendered by Mukesh in Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960), Akele hai chale aao jaha ho by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi in Raaz (1967), Bada bewafa hai jise dil by Suman Kalyanpur as well as Jinko hum apni nigaho mein, and Ui daiyaa aaye mohe laaj re by Suman Kalyanpur in Takht Aur Talwar (1970), and Main samjhti thi by Asha Bhosle in Chetna Dorahe Par (1980).
Among the many ghazals and non-films songs he penned were Saghar-o-sehba mutrib-o-naghma and Ro diye jab yaad unaki aa gai sung by Talat Mahmood, Ilaahi kaash gam e ishq kaam kar jaye rendered by Begum Akhtar, Nao sahil pe dagmagai hai by Begum Akhtar, Roshani lene chale the aur andhere chhaa gaye by Talat Mahmood, Kitni raahat hai dil tut jaane ke baad by Mohammad Rafi, Kyun hume maut ke paigam rendered by Hariharan, and Bazm se unaki ham kyaa laaye by Begum Akhtar.
Shamim Jaipuri passed away on 30 May, 2003.
