Ramesh Gupta

A multi-faceted talent, Ramesh Gupta was a singer, music director, lyricist, actor, director, producer, and also a writer. Active through the 40s, 50s and 60s, he penned the lyrics of songs such as Kaaton mein rehne waale from Matlabi Duniya (1961), Jai Ganesh jai from Maha Pooja (1954) and Toota sitara from Bhakta Puran (1952). He worked as lyricist for numerous films such as Awaz (1942), Kavita (1944), Nai Maa (1946), Bhakta Gopal Bhaiya (1948), Anmol Moti (1949), Ram Darshan (1950), Jalpari (1952), Veer Arjun (1952), Raja Harishchandra (1952), Bhagyawan (1953), Chetana (1953), Malika-E-Aalam Noorjahan (1954), Shiv Kanya (1954) and Krishna Sudama (1957). Gupta worked with music directors such as Chitragupt, Govind Ram, Jayanti Joshi and Shankarrao Vyas, while his songs were rendered by leading singers such as Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, Shamshad Begum, Mukesh and Geeta Dutt. Gupta himself also rendered the song Kahe nanha maro along with Miss Gulab in the film Raja (1943). He also directed films such as Rimjhim (1949) and Tyaag Patra (1978), wrote the dialogues for the film Kismet Ka Khel (1956) and produced Mera Geet (1946). As an actor he featured in films such as Raja (1943), Bijli (1950), Hamara Ghar (1950), Hamari Duniya (1952), and Mayurpankh (1954). In the non-film music category, he has to his credit the album Jis Dil Ne Mohabbat (1947), for which he scored the music. Ramesh Gupta passed away on 19 January, 1992.
