A character actor turned successful comedian, Ram Avtar was known for generating mirth onscreen. Born on 11 November, 1911 in Rawalpindi, Punjab, British India, he began his film career in the late 30s and early 40s, as a character actor. In the decade that followed, with increasing girth, he made the shift to comic roles, in which he was very successful.
Ram Avtar is best known for films such as Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963), Teesri Manzil (1966) and Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973), as well as hits likeTumsa Nahin Dekha(1957) and Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961) in which he essayed the hero’s sidekick. Among his earliest films are Lahore(1949), Bari Behen (1949) and Paras (1949). He had numerous releases in the 50s such as Madhubala (1950), Chor Bazar (1954),Char Paise (1955), Samundar (1957) and Chand Ki Duniya(1959). He played supporting actor roles in several films including Patanga (1971), Amir Garib (1974), Sadhu Aur Shaitan(1968), and Aradhana (1969). Among his last films areThodisi Bewafai (1980),Prem Geet(1981) andLove and God(1986).
