Marathi film director as also a writer of story, screenplay and dialogue as well as lyrics, Prabhakar Manajirao Nayak is known for making melodramas and comedies adapting the style of the urban tamasha, such as Punarjanma (1958), Sangat Jadli Tujhi An Majhi (1960) and Varat (1975). Born on 1 June, 1920 in Nanded district, Bombay Presidency, British India, he started off in films joining Navyug in Bombay in the 1930s as a projectionist. He went on to assist Naqvi in the period from 1942- 1945, followed by Pendharkar and Raja Paranjpe. He made his acting debut with Sukhache Sobti in 1958. Directed by Raja Bargir, the film starred Dhumal, Chittaranjan Kolhatkar, Anant Kumar, Sulochana Latkar, and others. The same year, he also made his directorial debut with Punarjanma (1958).
Focusing on direction thence forward, Prabhakar went on to direct several films over the 1960s and 70s. These include Sangat Jadli Tujhi An Majhi (1960), Sudharlelya Baika (1965), Chala Utha Lagna Kara (1965), He Naar Roop Sundari (1966), Khandobachi Aan (1968), Aai Aahe Shetat (1970), Daam Kari Kaam (1971), Paathrakhin (1972), Thapadya (1973), Varat (1975), Pandoba Porgi Phasli (1975), Padarachya Savleet (1977), Chandaal Chowkadi (1978), and Laath Mareen Tithe Pani(1981).
Among his best-known films are the classic Jayashree Gadkar sentimental Pathrakhin, and Thapadya, a parable about honesty in which a chronic liar reforms and wins over the Tamasha dancer. He was known to often cast stars from the Loknatya tradition, such as Usha Chavan, Sarla Yevlekar, Nilu Phule and Ram Nagarkar. He occasionally faced the camera too, as in Y Pethkar’sKeechaka Vadha (1959), as well as in several of his own films. He also produced his own last film, Laath Mareen Tithe Pani.
Prabhakar Nayak passed away on 24 May, 1986 in Bombay.
