Starting off his career as an actor, Niren Lahiri went on to become a successful director during the golden era of Bengali popular cinema, Born on 17 July, 1908 in Kolkata, he started his career as an actor in Barua Film Unit's Ekada (1932). He also featured as an actor in Debaki Bose's Abhinav (1940).
Niren Lahiri made his directorial debut in 1940 with Byabodhan. He also co-wrote the screenplay for this film. He went on to direct 27 films in Bengali and Hindi. Some of his Hindi films include Mahakavi Kalidas (1942) and Anban (1944). Some of his notable films in Bengali include Garmil (1942), Bhabikal (1945), Palli Samaj (1952), Kajari (1953), Jadubhatta (1954), Bholamaster (1956), Shankarnarayan Bank (1956), Prithibi Amare Chaye (1957), Indrani (1958) and Rajdrohi (1966). He worked closely with Nitai Bhattacharya who wrote the screenplays for 8 of his films. His Kajari was one of Suchitra Sen's early roles. He would work with her again in the Uttam-Suchitra starrer Indrani. With Uttam Kumar he worked in six films, including the highly successful Rajdrohi. He was the recipient of a Certificate of Merit at the second National Film Awards for Jadubhatta.
Forming the production company Chitrabani, he produced films like Bijayini (1941), Garmil, Ei To Jiban (1946), and Ratri (1947). He also produced films like Shadharon Meye (1948) and Joyjatra (1948). The veteran director passed away in 1972.
