Sound recordist and audiographer, Manohar Amberkar had little technical qualifications, to begin with, but it was through commitment and industry that he mastered his art. He came to Bombay after matriculating in 1944 and took up a clerical job in the finance department. After three years he gave up the job and joined Basant Studios as an apprentice in the sound department. In 1950, he joined Eastern Studios as an assistant recordist. In 1956 he joined Mehboob Studios in the same capacity when Eastern Studios closed down.

The bespectacled Amberkar got his first independent assignment as a sound recordist for a Marathi film called Yuge Yuge Mi Vaat Pahili in 1964 (the film ultimately released in 1965).  He then recorded for films like Shagoon (1964), Haqeeqat (1964) before he bagged the Filmfare award for Best Sound Recording in 1967 for the Raj Khosla superhit Mera Saaya (1966), for which he recorded the sound independently.

His other films include Anita (1967), Mastana (1970), Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), Do Chor (1972), Kuchhe Dhaage (1973), Dost (1974), Imaan Dharam (1977), Dostana (1980), Teri Maang Sitaron Se Bhar Doon (1982) and Sunny (1984).
