Director Jugal Kishore is known for films such as Fareb (1968), Khoj (1971) and Anokha (1975). Also a producer, actor and music director, he won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi, for Jagga in 1965.
Belonging to a small village Thakurdwara near Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, he lost his father at an early age. In order to escape poverty, he moved to Bombay in search of work. He started his career in the 50s with films such as Ghulam Begum Badshah (1956) and 10 O’clock (1958). He went on to direct several films such as Guddi (1961), Main Hoon Jadugar (1965), Fareb (1968), Deedar (1970), Khoj (1971), Apradhi (1974), and Dada (1979), which was highly successful and achieved a silver jubilee. He also produced films such as Dada, Nateeja (1969) and Munimji (1972).
Jugal Kishore’s award-winning directorial Jagga starred Dara Singh, Indira, Khairati and others in a story based on the 20th-century dacoit JaggaJatt. Dada, which he produced and directed, had a star cast featuring Vinod Mehra, Bindiya Goswami, Jeevan, and Amjad Khan. While Amjad Khan won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Fazl, K J Yesudas won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song Dil ke tukde tukde karke, and Sahir Ludhianvi was also nominated for Best Lyricist for the same song.
Jugal Kishore passed away on June 21, 1979 in Bombay.
