A Bhimsingh
A. Bhimsingh was a film maker, producer, editor and writer. His film career started as an assistant editor with the film making duo Krishnan-Panju in the late 1940s. He made his debut with Ammaiyappan (1954).
With Pathi Bakthi (1958), he started his won production company Buddha Pictures. The film was a major success, running for over 200 days. He made a series of films all of which started with the Tamil syllable ‘Pa’. He made an astonishing 20 films with ‘Pa’ in the title. Raja Rani was scripted by Karunanidhi and had strong ties to the Dravidra Munnetra Kazhagam movement.
His select filmography includes Amaiyappan (1954), Raja Rani (1956), Thirumanam (1958), Pathi Bhakti (1958), President Panchatcharam (1959), Ponnu Vilayum Bhoomi (1959), Bhaga Pirivinai (1959), Padikkatha Methai (1960), Kalathur Kannamma (1960), Paava Mannippu (1961), Pasamalar (1961), Paalum Pazhamum (1961), Parthal Pasi Theerum (1962), Padithal Mattum Podhuma (1962), Bandha Pasam (1962), Paar Magale Paar (1963), Pachai Vilakku (1964), Pazhani (1965), Paladai (1967), Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal (1975), Niraikudam (1977), Oru Nadigai Natakam Parkiral (1978), Karunai Ullam (1978), Kai Pidithaval (1978) and Iraivan Kodutha Varam (1978). His films were usually family dramas featuring memorable music by Vishwanathan-Ramamoorthy and songs by Kannadasan.
Other than Tamil films, he made Hindi films like Rakhi (1962), Pooja Ke Phool (1964), Khandan (1965), Mehrban (1967), Sadhu Aur Shaitan (1968), Gauri (1968), Aadmi (1968), Bhai Bahen (1969), Gopi (1970), Joroo Ka Ghulam (1972), Loafer (1973) among others. Some of these films were remakes of his earlier Tamil films.
Padikkatha Methai, Kalathur Kannamma and Pasamalar were also major successes. Kalathur Kannamma, inspired by Nobody's Child (1960), featured a young Kamal Hassan. Paava Mannippu was a silver jubilee hit with Sivaji Ganesan's performance especailly appreciated. Bhaga Pirivinai won the President's Silver Medal for Best Feature Film in Tamil. Kalathur Kannamma won the Certificate of Merit for Best Feature Film in Tamil. Paava Manippu, Pasamalar and Pazhani were also felicitated at the National Awards.
He married actress Sukumari in 1959.
