Cinemaazi remembers actress Ashalata Wabgaonkar on her death anniversary.

Born on 2nd July, 1941 in Goa she began her career as an actor, performing in Konkani and Marathi plays. Trained in classical music, she was a fine Marathi Natyasangeet singer. It was musical plays like Matsyagandha, that took her stage career to new heights. Having acted in several Marathi films like Umbartha (1980),Sutradhar (1987), Navri Mile Navryala (1984), Vahinichi Maya (1985) she became a popular figure in the Marathi Film and theatre circuit. Basu Chatterjee’s Apne Paraye (1980) marked Ashalata’s foray into Hindi films, fetching a Filmfare nomination for her debut role as Siddheswari. She went to act in several acclaimed Hindi films such as Ahista Ahista (1981), Shaukeen (1982), Namak Halaal (1983), Woh Saat Din (1983), Purana Mandir (1984), Ghayal (1990). Having said to have starred in over a 100 films, Ashalata Wabgaonkar authored Gard Sabhowati in 2017, a book looking back at her journey in films. At the age of 79, she was diagnosed with COVID 19 while shooting in the city of Satara where she breathed her last.
