Cinemaazi remembers Dev Kumar on his death anniversary.

Dev Kumar, known for his stature and personality, began his career as a hero before transitioning to a villain. He was born in 1930 in Peshawar to a farmer and pehelwan named Srikumar Kohli. He was fond of Urdu literature in school and later completed his BA from Delhi. He had a knack for shairi and writing plays. But he joined the army instead according to his father's wishes. Later he joined the police force where he became a part of the Customs and Anti-smuggling unit. But his heart remained in acting and he soon took to performing in street theatre. He was spotted by Satyen Bose who cast him as the hero in Mere Lal (1966). He acted in films like Spy In Rome (1967), Ek Phool Ek Bhool (1968), Bank Robbery (1969), Moojrim (1970), Balidaan (1971), Gora Aur Kala (1972), Ek Khilari Bawan Pattey (1972), Manoranjan(1974), Himalay Se Ooncha (1975), Khel Khel Mein (1975), Khaan Dost (1976), Do Shatru (1976), Hatyara (1977), Parvarish (1977), Chacha Bhatija (1977), Dharamveer (1977), Parmatma (1978), Ahinsa (1979, Desh Drohee (1980) and many more. He left to work in the US for some time in the early 70s. He was grateful to Shammi Kapoor for giving him a role in Manoranjan when he came back to India. Transitioning into the role of a villain helped him in prolonging his career. He was known for his skill as an orator and was often invited to different programmes to speak.
