Cinemaazi remembers noted character actor Krishnakant, aka K.K. on his birth anniversary. Born on 15 September 1922 in Howrah, Bengal as Krishnakant Maganlal Bukhanwala. Son of a textile engineer, he was educated in Surat and in Bombay. He obtained a diploma in Radio and Electrical Engineering in 1940 and then joined the sound department of Rooptara Studio in Bombay. He assisted Nitin Bose for five years and then worked with Arvind Sen in the film Muqaddar and Subodh Mukherjee in the film Paying Guest(1957).
He got his first major break with Phani Majumdar’s Andolan(1951). His other major work includes Amiya Chakravarty’s Patita (1953) where he played a paralytic and Shakti Samanta’s Detective (1957) where he was the villain. He left Hindi films in the 1950s to concentrate on Gujarati theatre, working mainly with Harkrishen Mehta’s group. He made a comeback in 1970s. He also directed films like Dakurani Ganga (1976), an adaptation of Mehta’s novel Pravaha Paltayo and continued directing a series of Gujarati films based on plays or films from other languages. He also became a reputed actor when he worked on Hindi and Gujarati television. In a career spanning 46 years, Krishnakant acted in 109 Hindi, 16 Gujarati, 2 Bengali and 2 English films. He also directed 2 Hindi and 13 Gujarati films.
He passed away on 24 October 2016 at the age of 94. His real-life was also made into a Gujarati film which was based on the book Guzara Hua Zaman by Biren Kothari.
