Cinemaazi remembers Noor Mohammad Charlie on his death anniversary

Cinemaazi remembers the veteran actor and singer, Noor Mohammad Charlie, popularly known as the Indian Charlie Chaplin on his death anniversary. He was born on 7 January 1911 in Ranavava, near Porbandar, Gujarat, in a Memon family. Fond of films, he came to Bombay and worked in a shop where he repaired umbrellas for a while.
He started his career in the silent era films. Records of only 9 of his films remain, although he was acting from 1925 to 1931. In one film, his imitation of Charlie Chaplin became quite popular with the viewers. Soon, he adopted a similar appearance as Chaplin and emulated Chaplin's technique in his own style. He also added 'Charlie' to his name.
His first talkie film was Zarina (1932). He did about 100 films in all. He was a lead opposite Swarnalata in Chand Tara (1945), opposite Leela Chitnis in Ghazal(1945) and opposite Chandraprabha in Dulha (1946).
