Cinemaazi remembers Munawar Sultana on her death anniversary

In a career spanning 12 years, Munavvar Sultana worked in 26 films as the leading lady. These included Andhon Ki Duniya (1947), Dard (1947), Elaan (1947), Nayya (1947), Majboor (1948), Meri Kahani (1948), Paraai Aag (1948), Sona (1948), Dada (1948), Dil Ki Duniya (1949), Kaneez (1949), Nisbat (1949), Raat Ki Rani (1949), Sawan Bhadon (1949), Uddhaar (1949) opposite Dev Anand, Babul (1950) co-starring Dilip Kumar, Pyar Ki Manzil (1950), Sabak (1950), Sartaz (1950), Apni Izzat (1952), Tarang, (1952), Ehsan (1954) opposite Shammi Kapoor, Toofan (1954), Watan (1954) and Jallaad (1956). She was often paired onscreen with Motilal. A popular face of her times, she also modeled for the famous soap brand LUX, which has featured every successful leading lady. Incidentally, the first-ever song sung by Umadevi (Tun Tun), Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon for the film Dard (1947) and Betab Hai Dil from the same film sung by Suraiya and Umadevi, were both picturised on Munavvar Sultana. The song Milte Hi Aankhein Dil Hua Deewana Kisika from Babul (1950), rendered by Shamshad Begum and Talat Mehmood, was picturised on Munavvar Sultana and Dilip Kumar and was a chartbuster of its times. Her film Kaneez (1949), composed by Ghulam Haider and Hansraj Behl, is also famous for being the first film for which O.P. Nayyar did the background score.
