The wicket-window of the prison opened and down came flowers like a down-pour. Mangal was sculptured with flowers. Katari's anxiety, Chhabili's happiness, Suleman's affections and Majnu's pleasure knew no bounds. With a beaming smile advanced Mangal. He was the very same Mangal who was dubbed a ruffian, a vagabond, a rogue and whatnot - a terror that was Mangal. The moment Mangal brandished his knife the word courage itself shivered. But, there were the other few, the stricken few, who called Mangal a bread giver, a saviour of the downtrodden, Mangal was a sought-after by the tears of the widows. Mangal was a slogan for the helpless. And, Mangal was the least attached with his own sores. He defended principles and staked his very being for the truth.

He committed a crime. The magnitude of the crime shook heaven and the earth. The news-boys raved about it. Law gained activity. And, tears glistened in the eyes of Katari - the tears of joy, not of sorrow. She cried but with a smile. Mangal had uprooted a sore of the society that was a slur on the growing nation. Sin was scraped on one end and on the other was soaring a sinister cloud of sorrows.
