Rupohi, the fifth Assamese film, was produced, scripted and directed by Parvati Prasad Barua. He also composed the music of the film. The film was released at Sati Talkies house on 6th September, 1947. Barua made a cameo appearance as Ananda Mahanta in the film. The film is about the love story of Bhumi (played by Dankan Achao)and Champa(played by Kannan Chakrabarty) in the village Rupohi. It narrates the lovers’ journey from their falling in love to their struggle to overcome the hurdles that come their way. Champa, after the death of her parents, is brought up by the greedy Mayaram (played by Surjya Baruah). Mayaram secretly searches fora rich bridegroom for Champa so that he can lead a life of luxury. The character of Kanak(played by Gauri Kakoti), is an educated young man who belongs to an aristocratic family in the city. One day, he visits the village Rupohi and gets introduced to Champa. The film narrates how the covetous Mayaram plots to convince Kanak to marry Champa. Though the film is basically a love story, it throws light on human nature and relationships. The cinematography was done by Bibhuti Dey and Dhiren Dey, while Charles Creed worked as the sound recordist. The melodious songs of the film such as Nubulu Tuk Xunor Axom/ Matir Axom Aai, Jonak Jonak Shital Jonak/ Sai Mur Sokulu Xore enrich the beauty of the film. Rajen Baruah, known for his association with Jyotiprasad Agarwala’s Joymoti (1935), was the assistant director of this film.
