Laughter, they say, is the best medicine and "Rang Birangi" is a film that will give you an ample dose of medicine....... laughter!

Ajay Sharma (Amol Palekar) is a hardworking and self-made businessman married to a beautiful girl, Nirmala (Praveen Babi).

Ajay's success in his business takes all of his time and therefore has no time left to pay attention to his family.

One day after returning from America, Ajay's childhood friend, Ravi Kapoor, (Deven Varma) comes to his house and notices the emptiness in Nirmala's life and hence decides to do something about it. Ravi executes a plot due to which Ajay starts taking interest in his secretary, Anita Sood (Deepti Naval) who is in love with Jeet Saxena (Farooque Shaikh) a professor in economics.

Ravi intentionally creates misunderstanding between Jeet and Anita on the one hand and complicates Ajay and Nirmala's relationship on the other hand. To complicate matters further Ravi sends Jeet as a private detective to blackmail Ajay.

As fate would have it, Ravi gets trapped in his own plot and ultimately, Ravi, Jeet, Anita and Ajay all of them are arrested.
